DESIGN NAME: Rock
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Trowel
INSPIRATION: This trowel design is driven by its fabrication approach, sand casting process. The interesting point is it's something designed to born from dirt(sand) and then serve in dirt. Sand casting could be applied to most of the metal objects and its attributes allow the designer to create this elegant, seamless trowel with a good ergonomic quality.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This trowel is designed to made by sand casting, a fabrication approach disregards undercuts and any demold problems. Therefore it could maintain its smooth and seamless shape. Its handle and blade are nicely blended together for ergonomic reasons, so it does not cause any discomforts to people even after a long work hours. The hollow handle design offers a good ventilation to the palm and make it suitable for hanging.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This trowel has its handle and blade seamlessly blended together for ergonomic reasons, so it does not cause any discomforts. The hollow handle design offers a good ventilation to the palm and also makes it suitable for hanging.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in November 2017 in Brooklyn and finished within 1 month.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Before the start of the design, the designer went to a jewelry production studio in Manhattan for field trip to see the operation of sand casting in person. The inspiration of this trowel is came from that experience. That trip is when the designer came up with the idea to design something which born from dirt(sand) and then serve in dirt. The result is this trowel designed to made by sand casting, the same production process could be applied to other gardening tools as well.
CHALLENGE: The morphology of this trowel is extremely crucial, so the designer spent a lot of time making blue foam models in order to try a variety of shapes before got into the next digital 3D modeling stage.
