DESIGN NAME: Nissan × Kengo Kito
PRIMARY FUNCTION: 2017 Calendar
INSPIRATION: A car is one of the daily necessities in modern days. We had an inspiration that working with Kengo Kito would create affinity.
Kito is a genius to create artworks, very colorful and pop with full of vitality, by using daily objects such as hula-hoops, laces, chains, mirrors and fluorescent lights.
It was very exciting to find out what kind of playful artworks he would create for this collaboration with unique Nissan cars.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A collaboration work with an up-and-coming artist is used for the Nissan calendar every year and a modern artist “Kengo Kito” was appointed for the 2017 calendar.
Creating a piece of artwork showing vehicles’ characteristics by applying Kito’s method was a big challenge. Kito gained his inspiration from vehicles used for each month and created 14 different type of artworks using daily objects for the calendar.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In general, the calendars are used as greeting gifts when visiting the clients at the end of the year. This is also the case at NISSAN. In addition, these calendars are delivered by the salesmen to NISSAN car owners.
NISSAN considers the calendar to be a powerful branding item as it becomes a communication tool that their customers will look at practically 365 days a year.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The calendar is to be delivered to salesmen at NISSAN dealers, and then distributed by them to customers.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Front page: Cloth used to create figures of tents (or mountains) is the size of 13m x 12m, 650 of all different scarfs are stitched together
December 2016: Wings placed over the cars are made with lumbers and LED fluorescent lights.
May 2017: Selected bright design beach umbrellas with a fun atmosphere.
August 2017: Used motors to turn around postcard display racks with various color acrylic boards. Afterimages created beautiful color mixture.
14 handmade artworks using daily objects were brought into the shooting studio.
Used 3DCG to generate car images and reproduced shininess/high quality the cars have by using reflections of objects and light creatively.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: When opening the calendar, a “car and paper cutout” visual is placed at the top and the calendar is placed at the bottom. Calendar dimensions: Width 345mm x Height 480mm. It starts from December of the previous year and ends in December of the current year, the total of 14 visuals.
This calendar uses “FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved paper”, which is made from thinned wood.

CHALLENGE: Kito shows his genius in changing daily objects into artworks, and his works are colorful, pop and full of vitality. A new method of expression created by Kito resonates with Nissan Motor Corp., a car manufacturer making exciting vehicles by looking ahead to the future before others.

Required us to have very detailed discussions with Kito. However, we felt confident this project would be very successful from the beginning. Our team’s strong will to create another excitement never seen before with this project was a driving force and ended up creating marvelous artworks Kito’s sensibility corresponding to Nissan cars.
