DESIGN NAME: Kulms
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stackable Chair
INSPIRATION: The inspiration of comes from the modern stackable chairs, such as the famous Panton chair by Verner Panton in the 1960s. It is all about redefining the simple function of seating device to elevate its functionality and mobility. The elevation of Kulms Chair is purely defined by how to stack one to the other, which produce very beautiful curved line of chair elevation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Kulms is a series of stackable chairs, which has two types of three legs (Kulms 01) and four legs (Kulms 02) chair configuration. Both of types can stack up to 7 or 8 chairs. The most unique property of Kulms Chair design is the smooth curved surface that is very simple and elegant, yet defined by its function.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Kulms Chair is very simple design, yet has very strong presence in a space wherever it is located. It can use as a study chair or guest chair. Also the Kulms Chair can be stored by stacking together when it is not used.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Designed in NYC in 2008
Prototype made in 2010 and exhibited at ICFF
Product launched in USA in 2011 after ICFF
Attended Exhibition at Tokyo Design Tide in 2011
Attended Exhibition at Taiwan Designers Week in 2016

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main abstract of Kulms Chair design is to re-define stacking chair with more homogeneous outlook. In order to create the ideal form, the material choice is the one of most difficult decisions we needed to make. Preferably we like to try injection molded plastic, however due to the cost and quantity, we look for different option. The final choice we take is to cut series of section and side laminate them into one chair form. It is perfect solution for making small quantity, however it creates another issue of mass production. Kulms Chair is still ongoing design investigation.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of Kulms Chair is to create very accurate stackable curvature. The elevation of chair was revised based on potential confliction while a few chairs are stacked each other. After all these iterations, the Kulms Chair achieved simple yet elegant form.
