PRIMARY FUNCTION: Elevating Dishwasher
INSPIRATION: During our graduation project in the final year of Industrial Design undergraduate program in Atilim University, we were let to freely choose the subject. I wanted to work on home appliances and did an intern-ship in a nationwide company.
Dishwashers are part of our daily life. My experience with the traditional dishwashers made me realize that it takes too long to load / unload the dishwasher and bending over. More importantly, bending motion during the process creates back pain. Throughout the persona research process I realized that majority of the users complained about the same problem. Therefore, I wanted to focus on eliminating the bending process in order to prevent the back pain and creating the efficiency gains.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This dishwasher elevates the dish rackets for a more ergonomic and easy usage without losing the loading space. The dishwasher can be installed to any kitchen counter as it has a folding door on the countertop face which prevents from interfering with the wall cabinets.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The dishwasher is operated via its control panel. Once the button with upward arrow indication is pressed, the rackets ascend through the rails connected via worm-gear. Once the loading / unloading is finished, the button with downward arrow indication descends the rackets. Thanks to the ascending design, sour back is no longer a problem for loading / unloading the dishwasher.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2017 and finished in June 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The material that the dishwasher is made of is stainless steel because of its noise reduction quality.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First, I started my research by conducting surveys and interviewing users on their experiences to pin point the user challenges. I also searched dishwasher companies both in web and through visiting their stores in order to understand available designs in the industry.
As I did my intern-ship in a nationwide dishwasher factory, I had the opportunity to review the design, manufacturing and sales processes which allowed me to identify the gaps that may be filled with the new dishwasher design.
Mentioned process above helped me shape the design and the functionalities of the machine. During the design process, I had the opportunity to interact with the colleagues that I did my intern-ship with, which helped me improve the manufacturability of the project.
CHALLENGE: The pimary challenge of this project was to come up with an elevating mechanism without losing any space in the loading area. Once the elevating mechanism was designed, secondary challenge became how to ensure the racket moves both horizontally for the drawer and vertically for elevation.
