| DESIGN NAME: Noce House PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence INSPIRATION: With a voluminous and column-free living room, dining room, open kitchen; and the lap pool on one side spanning more than half the length of the house - the entire length of wall on the first floor called for a definitive treatment to bring a clear concept and theme into the light-filled living space. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Noce House is located within an affluent area on the east coast of Singapore. With 5,800 square feet of built-in area over three storeys, the house has its own lap pool, elevator, five bedrooms and a roof garden. The aim was to create a modern contemporary interiors that is luxurious, and achieve a look that is timeless, communicating fine living and stature. To accommodate three generations living under one roof, spatial planning was of utmost importance. Entertainment of family and friends called for a bespoke treatment of the interiors. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With an extensive scope of works that include layout changes and a full fit-out, this project was completed in a period of 6 months. Close site supervison from the creative lead, the project manager and the main contractor ensured minimal mistakes and and near-zero slippage on the timeline. A prime consideration was to also minimize disturbances to the surroundings and the neighbourhood. Upon completion, the immediate neighbours to this house expressed gratitudue and praise for the efficiency that was exercised throughout the duration of works. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2017 and was completed in July. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Walnut was the choice of material. The design and painstaking work to built each walnut column element by hand resulted in an interior that is at once unmistakably modern, yet definitively refined. Wall-coverings exude warmth, color and luxury. Thin wood trims on the cladded wall panels add a touch of sophistication. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Type of Property: Semi-Detached House, 3-Storey Land Size: 3,500 square feet Built-Up Area: 5,800 square feet TAGS: luxury design, luxury interiors, modern interiors, contemporary interiors, modern luxury RESEARCH ABSTRACT: How can one create a sense of movement and elegance with wood? In this instance, with the choice of walnut. Waltz comes to mind. Waltz is a dance where the dancers adopt a very upright posture. The movements are prim and proper - very structured movements. Two dancers feel and move as one. The walnut column mirrors the physical form of a couple dancing waltz. The top and bottom supporting members connects the two long members - mirrors two individuals in waltz, becoming one. If one can imagine a grand ballroom where waltz is performed by say fifty couples, one will invariable feel a sense of grandeur. So in repeating the walnut columns across the entire length of the house interior on one side, scale is achieved to communicate the same - grandeur and elegance, albeit in a more contemporary and modern form. A waltz with walnut. CHALLENGE: The aim was to create a modern luxury residence that is contemporary, communicating fine living and stature. The creative challenge was to design a singular design element that can be applied throughout the house for coherence of theme and continuity. To have modern luxury felt not just on the first floor, but in every space throughout the house. On one side of the house, the wall runs the entire length from the Living Room to the Staircase, and continues to the Elevator, the Walk-in Closet, the Powder Room, and finally the Open Kitchen. The Lap Pool spans the opposite side terrace of the house, with its full height floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels. Clear from the beginning was that the stretch of wall needed a definitive design element that can be applied to the entire length to give the interior its theme. In consideration of achieving a modern form with a timeless look, walnut was chosen to be the main material and finish. A singular walnut column element was designed, comprising of two long members and two short supporting members, becoming the defining element of the concept for the interiors. This walnut column element was applied to the length of the Living Room, the Staircase including a concealed door to a utility space underneath, and the Dining Room. The walnut columns also serves as a divider to the Staircase leading up to the upper floors. The concept continues on the third floor, where these walnut columns runs the length of a counter ledge in the Bar Lounge and Entertainment Room. NAME: Dwell Interior Design, Singapore PROFILE: Dwell Interior Design was founded by Ed Ong in 2005. The strength of Ed and his team is in creating fine interiors for private residences. With extensive experience in landed homes, Ed's clients have also engaged him in the architecture of houses in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. On the commercial front in 2010, Ed was the first Asian designer to be appointed as the creative lead for the design of Blum's showrooms across Southeast Asia. Blum is a worldwide European MNC that manufactures furniture fittings used by most luxury brands. This collaboration spanned 2 years and saw the roll-out of its new showrooms in Singapore, Jakarta, Surabaya, Ho Chi Minh and Manila. Dwell's strengths and success owes largely to Ed's philosophy that that talent is meant to serve. He takes time to listen and understand the client. Ed believes that trust is the foundation of the client-designer relationship. And the team works hard to earn and keep that trust.
