DESIGN NAME: SpaceTime Coordinates Art Prints
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art Prints
INSPIRATION: This project is about celebrating humanity, its achievements and ingenuity. It helps us relate to the Solar System itself and find our own personal place in the universe.
The goal is to put things into perspective, in taking a moment to appreciate the human condition, nature, space, life.
Our time on Earth and within the universe might well be a tiny blip on the grand scale of time and space, but we should celebrate our humanity nonetheless.
No matter how ephemeral human life is, we have the obligation to always reach for the stars; keep on exploring, learning and creating.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project depicts the Solar System at any point in time in the most precise way as we rely on the same data that is used by NASA to predict eclipses or to compute spacecraft trajectories.
No two different dates produce the same design, resulting in truly unique Prints. And our Orrery is so accurate, it actually has been featured by OpenNASA.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Customer chooses a date to celebrate a personal event in their life, such as a birth date or wedding, or a historical event to commemorate.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Launched on Kickstarter in late 2017. Raised CA 79 520 from 913 backers. Production started in December 2017 in the USA and was completed in early 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We use the latest NASA data and algorithms to compute precisely the positions of the planets, as well as their orbital paths.
The four dimensions (x, y, z, and t) are used to represent a particular location in time and space, known as the 4th dimension. The orbital paths are illustrated by gradient lines, illustrating the counterclockwise direction of all the planets. The distances between the planets are schematised in order to make all the orbits and objects visible at such scale.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This new version of the STC project brings colors, legends and the moon! We used the JPL/Caltech generated planetary maps to set the colors just right. Finding the Moon's position adds a layer of difficulty as it requires very complex computations in order to ensure accuracy.
The prints come in 3 sizes: 200 x 2550 mm, 305 x 460 mm and 610 x 915 mm. They are printed on matte thick archival and acid-free paper or luster paper which has highly saturated colors, is fingerprint resistant and slightly glossy.
Available in 3 colors: pitch black, dark night and void white.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I came up with the idea in early 2014. At the time, I was very much obsessed with the concept of representing time and the human life within the spacetime dimension.
CHALLENGE: Develop a 3d simulation of the solar system that generates the planets positions according to any given date.
