DESIGN NAME: Waveform
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookcase
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the undulating waves of the sea, Waveform was created to represent the subtle movement of form in a curvilinear interpretation of motion.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Waveform is a series of modular metal bookcases which represent the undulating waves of the sea. The design consists of 3 different units which can stand alone as a single bookcase or combined in any configuration for larger spaces. The thin elegant design consists of a series of metal blades which play off of light and shadow. The design concept was to hide the true function upon first glance and then slowly reveal itself when perpendicular to the viewer.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design intent was to create a metal bookcase that could be hung on the wall like a picture characterizing the surrounding environment in a different way with respect to the classical aesthetic.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was originally a concept design entered into an international design competition in 2015 based in Treviso Italy. It was one of several designs selected out of 900 entries worldwide. The first prototype made its debut at MAISON & OBJET PARIS 2016. It went into production and became available to the general public in 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 3D imagining, computer aided design and laser cut technology was utilized to cut and manufacture the original prototype. Finished by hand and individually painted by experienced metal craftsman, each unit is 100% made in Italy to final production.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 217cm x 50cm x 32cm per unit. There are three different designs which can be used interchangeably in a non contiguous configuration. The units vary in shelf width from very narrow to medium and wide. They can be configured in a progression of open space or used in any order or desired composition.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research revealed similar objects were primarily executed from a standard front elevation perspective. Since the goal was to disguise the function of the object without having closed spaces, exploration into a solution revealed itself by changing the viewers angle of perspective, thereby providing unique opportunities to approach the problem with a unique solution.
CHALLENGE: The design criteria required a bookcase to adorn an empty wall just like a picture, disguising the function of being a furnishing accessory for hosting books and small objects. The design must be made out of iron or COR-TEN Steel utilizing laser cutting technology and weighing no more than 40kg. Compound curves, closed spaces and difficult to manufacture shapes were limitations to be avoided as well as closed doors or drawers.
