DESIGN NAME: litO
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bed Side Table
INSPIRATION: The user experience is the driving force of the creative principle in this project. I wanted to re elaborate the elements of a determined context and use materials such as glass, steel and fabric and how they interact with the use of every day items. Through an analysis of how we use objects and what improvements one could bring, the result was a simple product, complete in and of itself, but open to a use that did not change people habits, but transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: litO is the first surface that also can be a reading lamp . It is a great object to furnish our reading areas or bedrooms, taking the place of bedside and reading tables. It becomes a useful surface while maintaining its lighting function and is equipped with an inductive battery charger and a sensor that picks up the presence of the user and thus turns on the minimum setting as a guide, if needed. It also comes equipped with electric outlets and a speaker for your smartphone. An app also controls lighting intensity and colour.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: litO is a multifunctional object that can be both a small table and, with its up and down motion, become both a table or room lamp. The upward movement is controlled by exercising a light pressure on the lamp itself which starts the electric motor. To bring it back down, a small cord is pulled. It also has the capacity to sense a nearby person via thermal sensor and illuminate the surrounding area to guide users at night. The app allows manual setting of light intensity, colour and other parameters. The central surface is an induction charger with additional electrical and USB plugs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started in August 2017 and finished in November 2017 in Teramo.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The structural support is a aluminum pole anchored to the ceiling. The wiring is fed through the pole. The surface of litO is printable glass with many options. The glass surface has an aluminum insert that allows the passage of wiring for external uses and includes an induction charger. The lamp section is plastic and is lit via LED strips and lights. The entire structure moves via electric motor and steel cables. A Bluetooth speaker, USB and electrical socket, and a temperature sensor are enclosed in the product. The production is very simple given the shape and choice of materials:it only requires cutting, milling and folding.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: W 550 mm x D 550 mm x H 250 mm
Diameter 550 mm
Structure Bar, anchoring and pole diameter: 35 mm and 2500 mm of length

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There is a need to give value to objects that are common, but the result of a specific need of which we often take for granted. The result of this research is an extraordinarily ordinary product, where curiosity, humor, and beauty are standard, and people have a completely new object whose use is already familiar, the object being the result of the union of two or more usual things. Surrounding ourselves with these objects creates a world where everything is continuously linked, and apparently distant paradigms are surprisingly close.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge here was to create something complex and innovative, yet simple, easy to use and recognizable; to be able to renew habits and archetypical objects without alienating the user from their familiar context. In particular, here the challenge I faced was to find the right way to mix movement and functional complexity in a simple shape, an easy interaction and an almost still context.
