DESIGN NAME: Cocoon
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wine Rack
INSPIRATION: Mainly, this design was inspired by the natural cocoon of butterflies. It is fascinating how nature found a way to protect them until they show their true beauty. Similar to this concept, the leather flaps wrap around the bottles and store them until someone wants to find out their real beauty – the taste of wine. As far as the material is concerned, oak is chosen because it perfectly fits wine barrels. And the infinity shape reflects the long-taking process of the traditional wine production.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An abstracted form of an infinity loop shapes the light-appearing frame which is made of solid oak. The cubic concrete base gives the object the necessary weight to avoid it from tipping over and acts as a contrasting volume. Forged steel bars run in between the vertical parts of the frame and allow the leather flaps to hang on. Up to six wine bottles can be put into them to showcase and store them similar to butterflies that stay in their cocoons until they are ready to show their full beauty.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user can choose the number of bottles stored in each of the leather flaps. The optimum and visually best-looking version is either with one or three bottles. A maximum of six bottles can be put into each of the compartments.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2017 in Linz and has finished in October 2017 in Linz.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The base is cast from concrete and gives the object the necessary weight to avoid it from tipping over. The frame on top of it is made out of solid oak pieces which are connected with traditional tongue and groove joints. The steel bars are plugged in between the vertical wooden pieces and run through the black leather flaps. The forged heads of the steel pieces hold them in place and prevent them from sliding through.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: What are natural elements that protect their most valuable parts? The bark of trees, the shell of nuts or the cocoon of not fully developed butterflies. Butterflies often associated with beauty and freedom. The way how they develop themselves in hanging cocoons is impressive. I wanted to adopt this concept to a wine rack where each bottle has their own place to rest until it is ready to “hatch”.
CHALLENGE: The challenging part was basically to create a reinterpretation of a wine rack that combines all aspects of the wine production, the wine storing and what we most commonly connect with wine. The shape and structure had to be simple and clear but exciting as well. Also, appropriate materials had to be chosen to achieve the desired look.
