| DESIGN NAME: Purseat PRIMARY FUNCTION: Child Safety Seat INSPIRATION: Most parents are familiar with the pains of moving the big and heavy child seats in and out of cars; Regular car seats take up too much space to store away quickly; They are often heavy and hard to handle which can also make them inconvenient for taking on trips, which meant we would have to rent an expensive and often filthy car seat locally; Parents need a car seat that is conveniently compact and can fulfill a multitude of purposes on family journeys. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "Safety seat, travel bed, booster cushion & purse" in one device. For parents looking to eliminate the hassle of lugging around the heavy safety seat, this is the one that is easy to travel with,complies with the European Safety Regulation and folds to the size/shape of a purse. It offers these benefits: easy to use on the plane, in a rental car or taxi; occupies the space of a purse when stored; no need to spend money on a rented car seat; multi-function;conve OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To design a safety seat that our parents really need is our goal to reach. For the safety seat the safety is the first priority, so the team has to be professional. Our design team includes the mechanical engineers from the child seat factory and the impact test lab, the young parents and the salesmen in the baby product shop. This team knows what exactly to design for what exactly the parents need, based on the professional knowledge, the parenting experience and the users' complaint. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It started in Feb 2016 in Amsterdam Finished in May 2017 in Amsterdam Was exhibited at Kind und Jugend in Cologne in Sept 2018 |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Our team consists of engineers from the impact test lab and the safety seat factory, young parents and salesman in baby product shop. Then designed it based on the safety regulation, with our concept and experience. We designed it with a shape/size of the purse, which makes it totally different from the regular safety seat and more fashionable. The first prototype was to verify our concept among the young parents. From their feedback we knew exactly how to improve it. Reduced the plastic under the condition of not compromising the safety level. Better for the environment and weight. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimension: 19cm x 36cm x 40cm Weight: approx 6.5kg TAGS: purseat, foldable, safety seat, car seat, child, baby RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Via questionnaire among 52 young parents using the safety seat daily. 84% complains about the heavy weight, 92% about the cost on the rented safety seat and 98% about the big size. Data shows the compact seat is needed, especially on trips and in a small car. In order not to compromise the safety we invited a specialist from the impact test lab to work with us, so we could start in a professional way. The prototypes were checked and used by these parents and many valuable feedbacks came from them. After the study in their feedback we improved the design twice. In the end this design was selected and presented to the public. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to reduce the size and weight, meanwhile to fulfill the safety regulation as well. NAME: Purseat PROFILE: The designers have also a background in retail and especially in the parenting consumer products. Fatherhood brought them to want to pursue the combination of safety for children and convenience for parents. From this the first product, Purseat, and similarly named company were born. With Purseat, a combination of the word purse and seat, the 4 entrepreneurs thrive to develop a whole range of products that bring both safety and comfort to parent and child. For the safety seat, the safety is the first priority. This design team includes the mechanical engineers from the child seat factory and the specialist from impact test lab, the young parents and the salesmen in the baby product shop. This team knows what exactly to design for what exactly the parents need, based on the professional knowledge, the parenting experience and the users' complaint. The biggest challenge was to reduce the size and weight, meanwhile to fulfill the safety regulation as well. This design team took about 2 years and made it in the end. The Purseat passed the safety test of (ECE-R44) and 3C in August 2017. |
