DESIGN NAME: Unity
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Center table
INSPIRATION: In times of terrorism, war and hatred. Our inspiration was to create a table to express unity, through high design. Originating from Pakistan, the unity table emphasizes the idealism of unity, peace and equality by expressing these through beautiful craft and the lessons of traditional sufi music.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Etched by hand on the top is a conceptual representation of the world map, further tied together by deeper etchings of longitude and latitude markings. This delicate weave is positioned on a solid rose wood hand carved drum base inspired by the traditional instrument the tabla, used in local sufi music songs of peace. The two mediums are held in place by a Solid Brass ring.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Hand Etched world maps are prepared by our artisans. The Base is built by pressing curved veneers of Rose wood carefully aligning the wood grain. Once the top and the base are fused, a solid Brass ring in fitted to hold the two together. Each surface is stained in varying shades and then lacquered in polyurethane coating.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Developed in 2017, in Karachi, Pakistan

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research involved taking metaphorical, vernacular elements which stood for unity and peace and translating them to high design furniture, which could be seen in the best interior spaces within homes or yachts. Studying the formation of the Tabla sufi music instrument we derived the base design, and further developed it by layering multiple bent wood veneers to create a delicate undulation. Further taking the world map and abstracting it in a flat sphere, defined the entire world, married to peace (the base) by the use of a solid brass ring.
CHALLENGE: Our challenge was to create a piece, which would appeal to luxury residential interiors or yacht interiors, yet tell a compelling story of unity and peace, being created by the hands of Pakistani designers and craftsman. By fusing our research, with rich solid rose wood material and polyurethane lacquer, and solid brass. A story was to be told, while validating an aesthetic to fit amongst surrounding high design furniture in luxury homes and yachts.
