DESIGN NAME: TwiStool
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Veneer Stool
INSPIRATION: The TwiStool is inspired by Scandinavian veneer furniture, using 2D material to create 3D object with natural textures and additional strength. The vacuum bending manufacture techniques makes it possible for the ergonomically friendly and aesthetically dynamic form.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The TwiStool is a veneer stool drawing inspiration from its Scandinavian context and achieves maximum utility with minimum production cost. Aesthetically, it presents various forms when looking from different angles with the dynamic twisting design. Functionally, the form detail makes the seat ergonomically friendly as well as being easily carried around. Production-wise, the TwiStool used vacuum press technique, forming 2D material to 3D object with natural textures and additional strength. It only needs one mould to produce all three legs, thus significantly reduces the cost of manufacture.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The slot design on the seat's surface allows easy pick-up of the stool. And the curving detail at bottom of the legs provides space to stretch the feet in a limited space setting, at the same time enabling the stool to adjust for any floor situation with a stable three-point standing support.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project duration: 7 weeks;
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark;
Exhibition: Din-Design In Design Exhibition, Milan Design Week, April 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The TwiStool is using the vacuum press technique, creating the curving shape by bending the glued maple veneer pieces in the heat. This design saves the manufacture cost by using one standard mould for all the furniture parts.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 400mm x Depth 400mm x Height 432mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The objective of the research of this project is to understand the philosophy of Scandinavian design, and the design & manufacture process of veneer furniture. By reading design history & academic papers and taking lectures from famous Danish furniture designers, I learnt that Scandinavian design is a design movement focusing on simplicity, minimalism and functionality, man out to be in harmony with his environment, not simply the owner of it. I also visited many furniture design museums, design showrooms & stores and famous architectures in Denmark, Sweden and Finland to learn veneer furniture from the broad concept to the details of its design and manufacture, and concluded that the essence of veneer furniture is to reform the 2D material to a 3D object with clean and simply appearance, natural texture, additional strength and great ergonomic. And during the factory visiting, I got some useful insights by watching through the whole veneer furniture making process and found the design potential on reducing the manufacturing cost. CHALLENGE: The most challenging task of this project was to figure out the 2D profile of the legs that folds and moves to create the dynamic 3D form. I ended up coming up with a solution to first create some paper mock-ups and 1:1 scale cardboard mock-ups to adjust the size and shape of the stool. Then using the 2D outline from the mock-ups to build a metal mock-up that allows people to sit on and test if it’s ergonomically friendly. And eventually after the refinement from the metal mock-up, I got the final 2D profile. (Please see more info in the document pdf file)
