| DESIGN NAME: Kabu PRIMARY FUNCTION: Console INSPIRATION: The console table Kabu was born from our deepest admiration for nature and its shapes. One day, we received a photo that caused us a great curiosity: it showed a forest in Poland with trees growing with their trunk curved. Our console table Kabu was born with the idea of reinterpreting these shapes and winking at nature, infinite source of wisdom and beauty. Our aim: designing with an idea of future, fighting for creating pieces that last over time, that pass from generation to generation by making use of crafting skills and the best materials. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The console table Kabu seeks to transmit simplicity and balance through its lines. The delicate work of cabinet-making perfectly combines thickness with edging in order to highlight the beauty of wood itself and the drawing created by its grains. This Nordic and Japanese-inspired piece in equal proportions, with clean lines and a timeless design, can fit into any space regardless the style. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The console table Kabu is designed to provide auxiliary furniture with the ability of communicating through its forms, lightness and harmony. Thus, it can be appreciated as an artistic piece added to our environment, instead of being considered one more inanimate object in the room. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Kabu was designed and created in 2014 in Galicia, Spain. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The console table Kabu is entirely made from solid wood, applying handcrafting high quality standards. The curved shelf stands out in this piece, following the line created by the legs and providing harmony to the design. In order to achieve the curved form, we laminated the wood in 3 to 4 mm thick (depending on the wood type) and we curved and glued them on a mould one by one. This is a slow and laborious process, but its result enhances the work of the hands behind its creation. The whole assembly is done by cabinet-making. We use a splined joint for the boards, while we make use of the mortise-and-tenon joint for the legs. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1100 mm x Depth 400 mm x Height 800 mm Handicraft production. Material: Chestnut, oak, cherry or walnut solid wood. TAGS: woodfeelings , kabu , console , qualityfurniture , wood , furnituredesign RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research behind the manufacturing of handcrafted pieces made from solid wood involves a great work. In order to determine which are the best assembles that will provide the durability and resistance of a lifelong product, a detailed study of the raw material, the wood’s torsion forces, thickness and assembles is needed. To achieve the final result, a long process of layout and prototyping was required in order to achieve a product cared down to the finest detail. CHALLENGE: The greatest difficulty faced was laminating the wood for the creation of the curved shelf: most of the laminates broke down when placed on the mould for their curving. Hence, we had to calculate the minimum thickness that would give us the flexibility needed for creating the curve without breaking.
