DESIGN NAME: Vectis
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Armchair
INSPIRATION: Vectis is an modern reinterpretation of early 20th century armchairs with influences from both the Bauhaus and Art Deco mouvements. The inspiration for the marquetry is metaphoric as well as geometric.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Vectis is an armchair based on a trapeze and rhombus shaped wood structure with leather cushions. The lateral and backwards inclination of the structure underlines the dynamic character of the creation.
The whole structure is covered in maple veneer while the cushions are made from full grain leather. The graphic and pictorial ebony marquetry inlay on the structure and the contrasting leather stripes on the cushion create an aesthetic tension. All materials and finishes are of high quality.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Ergonomically, Vectis is an armchair with arm and lombar support. The seat is at a classic heigth of 45cm while the elbow and lumbar support reaches 69cm height.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Vektis was started in February 2017 and finished in August 2017 in Geneva Switzerland.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Vectis is based on a wood structure with a marquetry inlay on a flamed maple background. While the marquetry inlay is hand-made, the path for the inlay is numerically machined to ensure highest precision. The cussions are hand-made from full grain leather.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea was to create a contemporary design armchair. The dimensions were inspired by the ergonomic dimensions of a Bauhaus armchair (F51 from Gropius). Only the basic dimensions, seat height and width, arm and lombar support height were used.
CHALLENGE: Vectis is part of a collection of contemporary art funiture pieces (Labyrinth, Shift, Literis), whose aesthetic is based on generic geometric shapes with an ebony marquetry on a maple background.
