DESIGN NAME: Gorenjska
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chest
INSPIRATION: The inspiration lies in tradition- in the typical elements of folk culture- heart is a universal symbol of well-being; and when one of the six hearts is substituted with a semicircle, carnation flower appears that is (nonformal) symbol of the region. The chest has become the most special piece of furniture in client's home- just like centuries before, using only locally harvested cherry wood.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A wooden chest, made of cherry wood is a reinterpretation of traditional chests, once most important and prominent pieces of furniture, fully painted. The treasure that is kept inside reflects in the pattern that changes from heart to carnation, both elements very typical ethnically for the region. The hexagonal composition is concise on the top and than gradually diminishing in size and dissapearing as an image of the old chest, being gradually erased by the pass of time..
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The chest brings an emotional value to the house. The main motive is the heart- which draws paralels to the family, warm home- etrenal values. The message and the material are lasting, have no expirations date so lift the living quality of its owners.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in our atelier Kranj, Slovenia in November 2016 and finnished in April 2017. It will be exhibited in Month of desihn, Ljubljana, Slovenia this October

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: CNC cut, hand-brushed, 2 coats of tunga oil, cherry wood.
Computer designed: a logic for this pattern were hexagonal geometric patterns known in muslim world or Spain- where we worked in the past. We took the geometry and translated it completly to slovene language. The surfaces of cherrywood were cnc- carved and little details of walnut were inserted, and "walnut butterflies" to keep pieces together are seen in the interior. And afterwards long hand- finnishing

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We wanted to develop an important family furniture piece- one that they would identify with, that would stay with them for generations. Gorenjska is the north region of Slovenia and it is important for its ethnological heritage- it is famous for its painted wooden chests that were made to keep most precious belongings, usually painted with typical ornamental elements- such as heart or carnations. We wanted to use and revive this tradition but in most contemporary way.
CHALLENGE: An important focus was developing a pattern- one that would continue in all directions and would enable variations- in size and shape. During our stay in Spain we studied "mudejar" hexagonal patterns - but we made it local! Thus on the cover the pattern is concise and goes smaller and more fragmented on side surfaces- so gradually changes from surface to separate carnation flowers and-hearts.
An art for detail was needed to execute walnut details.
Cherrywood is a rare wood variety but good for woodcarving, but: countless hearts needed countless hours of hand-brushing.
