| DESIGN NAME: URBANIZED PRIMARY FUNCTION: Care free bike INSPIRATION: URBANIZED is a designer bicycle, engineered for the ultimate urban comfort and ease of use, maintenance free, weatherproof and portable. With so many bicycles around we could not find one that truly matches the needs of young professionals, design oriented, with active lifestyle. We built this bicycle believing that great design must be the foundation of every good engineering solution. It embodies the concept of a maintenance free bicycle. We mixed and matched the best available components in a unique matrix to build the ultimate urban bicycle. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Design is the heart and soul of what we do. We believe that great design must be the foundation of every good engineering solution. The classic road bike frame geometry gives the bicycle a timeless look. We eliminated all the noise - invisible welding and holes for the fenders. One piece handlebar and stem is specially designed to enhance the customer expectation of minimalism. We made it monochrome. Unicoloured frame, rims, handlebar make a fashion statement. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Engineered for the ultimate urban comfort and ease of use, the urbanized bicycle fully embodies the concept of maintenance free bicycle. The belt drive, the internal gears hub, the roller brakes and the solid tires make life easy. Riding a bicycle like this is completely care free. The handle integrated in the lightweight aluminum frame makes it easy to carry the bicycle up and down the stairs and take the city shortcuts which can save even more time. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started few years ago and now we are at the door of starting it. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The engineering solutions follow the concept of a maintenance free bicycle. We mix and match the best available components in a unique matrix to build the ultimate urban bicycle. The belt drive provides grease free and extremely durable transmission. The roller brakes are concealed and suitable for all weather conditions and require no attention. The internal gear hub provides enough gears for the city and shifting gears, while standing still at the traffic lights is of great convenience. The lightweight aluminum frame features a handle for carrying the bicycle. It was born within us first and eventually through observations and interviews it was validated by others too. We studied hundreds of designs we did field trials on every bicycle worth consideration during a two-year R and D process resulting in 12 prototypes and 58 different parts combinations. Data collected from dedicated focus groups helped us address the problems and strengthen the advantages. CHALLENGE: With the concept of the Ultimate Urban Bicycle we faced a huge design and engineering challenge. Working closely with bicycle industry professionals we had to translate our design objectives into bicycle language. For some of the details and engineering solutions we had to develop new to the industry designs and functionality. We had to mix and match parts from suppliers all over the world Taiwan, Japan, China, Korea, Europe.
