DESIGN NAME: QWERTY
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sofa
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for QWERTY came from the many times I have fallen asleep on my keyboard. Thus, it became natural to make the keyboard more comfortable. The natural disposition of a keyboard did the rest and made qwerty the extremely adjustable surface it is.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sooner or later, we all end up by falling asleep on our computer’s keyboard. Turning the archetypal image of a keyboard into a sofa bed, QWERTY holds you on its soft keys while working in the office or at home, bringing a pinch of irony in our daily life. Anyway QWERTY is much more than a sofa bed. Thanks to micro electric motors controlled by a remote control, every single keycushion is adjustable to give total freedom. In this way, the furniture becomes a unique and comfortable support.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The sofa is flexible, each key is adjustable via a special remote. The remote has 10 per-programed settings, but more can be added. Qwerty can become a bed, a sofa, a completely customizeable surface.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was created in 2012 in Teramo, and has won:
IDA Gold winner 2013 in the category of the professional home interior products and the subcategory of interior furniture;
Red Dot Award Design Concept 2016 in the category of furniture.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I wanted to focus on the user experience and try to combine a functional tool and an image archetype in order to produce an innovative object that guarantees flexibility and functionality, while keeping that familiarity of the object we're used to seeing. By using these familiar images, creating a hybrid of parallel world and languages, we decontextualize these forms and give them new meaning and make our lives better. The object fulfills its task by being innovative, not technological.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was including such an out of the ordinary functionality in an object that is so familiar to us. The effect that comes from that is a trasfert, between man and object.
