DESIGN NAME: EP-Books
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exhibition Space Reading Area
INSPIRATION: Based on serenity and exploration, we combine bookstore, living house with café. Comparing with the traditional reading spaces, our project break through all kinds of abilities and try to develop the greatest efficiency of a bookstore.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “You live and you read”. Located on a quiet alley in the prosperous street of Taipei, EP-Books provides a cozy place for urbanite which can be far from noisy life. The hue of entire store is form of different shades of wood and black color. Simple color can not only magnify the shapes of space, but also express the spirit of industrial style. Differ from regular bookshops, we design a high bar table near the drinking counter to create a household living area. People come here drinking and chatting which makes the ambiance more relax.“Natural” is the soul of the concept. We plan an opening space in order to build a free and easy space. Different floor materials divide each area whether to lessen the obstruction or to clarify every zone. Entrance floor is paved by resin slurry; reading zone is coved by plastic floor. It increases the diversity of interior.
Extensive windows bring the flourish light in, delight the place and decline the power consumption. There is a park behind the store, so we put an openable window and let the air circulate. It is still hush even when it’s opened. Circulating air and flourish light seems like reading out door. Settling your mind and listening to your soul while visiting here.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Multi-material. We made a contrary between wooden texture and metal. Trying to separate the ceiling and the floor.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started in January 2017 and finished in July 2017 in Taipei
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The hue of entire store is form of different shades of wood and black color. Simple color can not only magnify the shapes of space, but also express the spirit of industrial style. Moreover, dark wood lines from the ceiling to the floor, connects black with light color which makes more levels on visual. The bookshelves are painted with dark gray. Also, soft tint pine with sharp steel piece set colorful books’ cover off and complete the shelves with the space. It is simple modern but little retro that brings out the atmosphere and taste of reading.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Area: 429 m2; high: 3.5m
TAGS: EP-Books Reading Life modern Nature
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Surrounding by flourish trees and grass in a quiet alley, We tried to design a place that fit with the environment. Due to the greenery, we set lots of large windows that people can enjoy the beautiful view and atmosphere while reading.
CHALLENGE: Because books are full of many different color, we need to come up with an idea which won't make the store messy. "Achromatic color" is the answer. By only using three types of color: black, light grey and wooden color, we succeed to magnify the books with the shelves.

EP-Books is an outstanding example of Interior Space and Exhibition Design. The simplistic yet effective use of wood and black colors creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The high bar table near the drinking counter and the openable windows connecting the space to the park behind it, create an inviting and comfortable living area. The use of different floor materials to divide each area is clever and helps to bring clarity to each zone. The extensive windows bring in plenty of natural light, creating a bright and airy ambiance. Finally, the achromatic color scheme allows the books to take center stage and be the main focus of the space. EP-Books is a truly remarkable design that deserves to be celebrated.
