| DESIGN NAME: Quiet Shadow and Flowing Light PRIMARY FUNCTION: Screen INSPIRATION: With the perspective of the carved floral window in classis Chinese garden, with the oriental aesthetics and the important element of the Chinese garden scenery - Taihu stone to create an oriental aesthetic dream. Common landscape elements were selected: willow branches, bamboo, crane, etc., but also adding some Western elements, a symbol of lucky Virgin Mary's messenger – ladybug. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The art work combines the traditional manual double-sided embroidery and modern optical fiber technology to create a dream of Oriental aesthetic. Look from different angles gives you different view. look up for the branches in winter, look down for the mist coming from quiet valley. It has the virtual of bamboo shadow, the reality of lucky messenger ladybug, the swaying poplar branches fly with wind, red-crowned crane stand alone. It brings you the details and take you to the Oriental dream. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Inspired by the lattice window elements in the traditional Chinese garden, this screen set combines double-side embroidery with modern concepts. It is detachable so as to have more possibility in building different types of poetic beauty. It can work as a floor screen or combo screen according to different situations. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2017 in Nanjing China and finished in Feburary 2018 in Nanjing, will exhibite in Triennale di Milano in April 2018. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This group of screens can be used independently, but also in groups. The optical fiber can change different colors, it is suitable for different environmental needs, meanwhile, every single window can be removed, and use them as table screen for expanding the space. So we decided to bring the beauty of traditional Chinese gardens to the public in the form of a screen, combine the beauty of traditional oriental elegance with contemporary design, and adding fiber-optical elements, the illusion of the screen was even more fantasy and dynamic. CHALLENGE: We had the problems of how to interpret the classical Chinese landscape with the visual language of modern art, how to interpret the traditional handicraft with the contemporary spirit, how do modern technologies such as optical fibers complement traditional handicrafts and how to use combination of screens, single screen and they can be us appropriately in different occasions.
