DESIGN NAME: Compound Table Set
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table and Side Table
INSPIRATION: I wanted to create a simplistic coffee table with the foundation of geometric shapes. Also, creating something that has the ability to expand or reduce depending on the liking of the users. Each top has different designs and sizes. The semi-circle designs were added in not only to juxtapose the geometric shapes but also is useful for the carrying smaller items.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Compound is a contemporary coffee table made with brass, giving it a luxurious feel. The coffee table can be moved around and placed on the Compound side table to create a bigger coffee table. The use of a wooden top creates a new texture and creates a contrasting dynamic to the brass to keep it intriguing for the users.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Compound side tables were manufactured at a brass casting company that has been working in the business for over 2 decades. The making of these tables consists of 2 different processes.
The brass frame surrounding the wooden top was done by casting, using the lost wax process since it needed to be thick to balance out the wooden top that is to fit inside. The legs were done by welding pieces of brass together until the desired shape. As for the top, the bowl was made a lathe machine, we then attached the wooden bowl onto a 15mm thick piece of wood that had been cut and shaped into appropriate top size thus, making this unique table top.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2016 in Bangkok and finished in April 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand, and will be exhibited with 'Meet My Project' during Paris Design Week2017 at Via Gallery.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The tables were designed and developed with it being an art installation since it is a piece of furniture, the end product, therefore, is not only functional but also gives the audience different viewpoints similar to an art installation.
The collection consists of a 50cm high side table and a coffee table that has 2 different levels. With that, the 2 tables are able to be moved and placed together per the user’s likings creating and giving the different perspective to the tables but still keeping its fundamental design.
After manufacturing, I was then able to share photos of the work through websites such as Designboom in which the feedbacks were better than expected, Thus, led to contacts from representatives from different design weeks from various countries.
CHALLENGE: The process of designing had been through much debate, consideration, trial and error. A real sized mock up of the tables were made before being manufactured into brass. Since the collection consists of pieces that are alike, yet different, and still has to work together as though they are one, I had to make sure that the two were able to be put together and together they look seamless and falls perfectly into place.
The designing and manufacturing process therefore had to also put into consideration the weight for practicality and appropriateness for moving. The casting process had to be closely monitored for the weight not to exceed as well as to prevent the brass from deforming. Since the pieces had to be very specific in weight, dimensions, of the table as a whole, but also the top, we had to use skillful craftsman in order to execute the design both for the brass casting as well as the wooden tops. Attention to details was the number one priority, since the littlest error can result in bigger problems. If anything is different from the design, it may lead to problems with the consolidation of the wooden tops to the brass frames and legs.
