DESIGN NAME: Atlos
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Folding Bicycle
INSPIRATION: When choosing a bike, some residents of cities think about how to storage their new purchase in the future. There are many ways how to do it, but not all of them are compact.
The basic idea of my project is to create a bike that combines unique design and compact storage, that will not limit people in their hobby.
First of all I will start from the idea that a bicycle is a constructor that is made of several parts fastened together.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The idea is an engineering experiment: rethinking of bicycle components and achieving a new way of storing and transporting.
The final object is a bicycle frame in a form of a parallelogram, which is very compact when folded.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The frame has four holes through which passes a seat post and a fork, thereby locking the frame in a specific position, thereby creating a strong construction.
Thus, the build process of this bicycle is a very simple operation that can be done by anyone.
Assembly process of this bicycle is 10 to 15 minutes and requires only the two most common tools.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2015 in Moscow and finished in May 2016, and was exhibited in SaloneSatellite WorldWide Moscow 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In order to create a full working bicycle I had to learn what components it consists of.
To understand the process of folding I made some small modes. Later I made a cardboard model of the bicycle frame in full dimension to understand its real size. After it I implemented all components of the bicycle into steel and welded all together.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: 1700 mm x 400 mm x 900 mm
Material: steel

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Firstly I explored the history of the invention of a bicycle, its evolution. Then I explored other aspects such as: types; materials; ergonomics; its components; pros and cons of bicycles; the role of bicycles in modern society; types of cyclists; how people improve their bicycles. Then I collected the data and realized that one topic curious for me more than the others: bicycle components. I explored this topic more, redefined a principle of folding of bicycles and I created my project - Atlos.
CHALLENGE: My challenge in this project was to show that the familiar things that surround us, that we use every day have the potential of further evolution of form and interaction. A careful study of any object helps to look at it from new angles.
