DESIGN NAME: Finishfire Charging Platform
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modern magazine rack hides extinguishers
INSPIRATION: A need to design a useful product for online shop. My idea was to have a permanent place for the fire extinguishers in the living room and to arrange the tablets away from the living room table. During the design process, I saw an old wooden table with oval hole. A combination of glossy and matte, oval and rectangle developed in my head.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cabinet is a charger for your mobile devices or a magazine
rack, but also a cabinet for fire extinguishers. It is intended for private homes so all users know what the cabinet contains. There is an inside shelf where you can hide your USB
divider. The plastic oval cover can be swapped to suit your color taste.
Charging platform covers your fire-extinguishing equipment,
still leaving easy access to it. The fire blanket is pulled out
from below. The spray extinguisher can be removed from the
top of Charging platform or by opening the cabinet. When sold fire extinguishers are included in the package.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You can use The Charging Platform as a magazine rack or a charging place for 1 to 3 mobile devices. Place your USB divider on hidden inside shelf. From here you take your charging cables through a hole in the plastic to your tablets on the shelf.
The fire blanket 120cmx180cm is pulled out from below. The handles of the fire blanket can be hidden in the inside shelf. Blanket protects you from burning and it is used to suffocates flames.
The spray extinguisher FirePal Kitchen from GPBM Nordic OY (several other spray extinguisher fit as well like Tundra from Firs Alert) can be removed from the top or by opening the cabinet. FirePal Kitchen is a compact, efficient and easy to use extinguishing spray that can be used by all (children included). It is designed for extinguishing small fires (ABF). It also extinguishes electrical fires up to 1000V.
All users must know what the cabinet contains.
The cabinets are not intended for public spaces
that instead follow the rules set by fire authorities.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2015 in Espoo/Finland and finished in June 2016 in Espoo/Finland.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Three main pieces: 1/wall mount, 2/wooden or MBF board cabinet cover and 3/polycarbonate oval cover. There is two small holes in the plastic for charging cables. The plastic plate snaps into the groove and comes off without tools. Wooden cabinet cover opens like a door and opens easily just by pulling.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 295mmx190mmx440mm
Oval area height 335mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I built the first wooden Charging Platform, so I could find out do I get the fire extinguishers out easily and whether there is enough space for cables. The next prototype was built by carpenter Kim Tasanko. He made more tighter dimensions and developed the grooves for the plastic. Industrial production has not started yet.
CHALLENGE: One challenge was the logo. The logo has very important role. It is supposed to tell the contents of the cabinet. It is supposed to be stylish but still easy to read.
Another challenge was to find a suitable plastic material to oval cover. Thin, flexible and robust. Plastic is sheet material and it is not shaped.
