PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table
INSPIRATION: The Wingz Table concept was inspired purely out of a desire to create a stable, convenient platform for sofas and arm chairs - one that allows you to enjoy a beverage or work on your laptop without the need for a table at your feet. While many contemporary chairs and sofas have flat and level padded arms, few lack the structure to use the arms as a table or platform. Finding an adaptable and stable solution that worked with this type of furniture motivated the design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Wingz Table is a side table that puts food, drinks, laptops, books or practically anything, within easy reach on your favorite sofa or chair - without requiring additional floor space. This stable platform is fabricated from two pieces of laser-cut aluminum. It takes just two screws to assemble the table and adjust it for a variety of arm widths. A sleek, custom-fitted silicon rubber pad is an attractive addition that ensures objects do not slide off the table.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Wingz Table can be easily adjusted to fit a variety of arm widths. Two screws are loosened with a hex key to adjust the width to match the arm width. The screws are then tightened and the table is slid down onto the chair arm. Once the size has been set, the table can be removed and re-installed at any time. The table can be outfitted with a slot cover for an industrial look or a non-slip silicon rubber pad for a sleek, attractive look.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Wingz Table was developed in 2016/17 and is the first product for Zovuna. Mass production of the product will start in late April 2017 and sold online at zovuna.com.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Wingz Table is fabricated from 5052 H32 aluminum plate. The outline is laser-cut before a counter sunk slot is CNC machined. It is then bent into shape. The aluminum is grained and then clear anodized. The non-slip pad is pressured molded from silicon rubber.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Once the concept was identified, market research was done to determine the types of similar products that existed. Finding none that provided an acceptable solution, further research was done on the shape of chair and sofa arms to target for the product. This information was used to determine the size and range of adjustability needed. Given that this was the first product of this type created by the designer, research was needed in the 3D modeling tool selection, materials and finishes available and fabricators selection.
CHALLENGE: A fabricated model was used to determine the appropriate size of the Wingz Table. Aluminum had to be bent to confirm strength, and the slot shape designed to ensure screw heads were hidden and supported the alignment of the non-slip silicon pad. Designing free space into the slot for either a cover or for use as an alignment feature of the non-slip pad posed a challenge. The design of the snap-in feature of the plastic slot cover was difficult, given the tolerances and strength of materials.
