DESIGN NAME: Singularity
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Photographs
INSPIRATION: The ongoing series Singularity is a minimalist celebration of global architecture as sculpture. Architecture photography and this very minimalistic style might not invite the viewer to reflect on anything, it might just be a good catalyst for rest. Some pictures in this ongoing series do raise questions: what does the neighbourhood look like? What about the other buildings?
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Singularity is a series of urban buildings from around the world, where the neighbor-buildings, the urban environment is deleted. It's just the building and the sky.
Like a sculpture on a pedestal in a clean gallery or museum. I isolated the buildings from their thrumming urban environments and put them on a blue-sky pedestal.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: I take a lot of pictures when I am on the road. You can imagine what a guy with a weakness for architecture often shoots? Right, buildings. To be honest, I started this series playing around with a couple of pictures I took in New York last November, and instantly fell in love with that reduced look. I crawled though my archive of the last two years and found more candidates for the series from Hong Kong, England, Spain, France and Germany. Before I go on the road now I research the area, looking for buildings that might fit into Singularity.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Ongoing project, worldwide

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Shot with a fullframe Nikon D800E and mostly a 35mm lens or the Nikkor 12-24mm lens. The postproduction was made in Adobe Lightroom, the sky is a color gradient, based on the original sky-colors of the picture. I added some grain to emphasize the singularity-effect.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 30 x 40cm, limited to 10 pieces or 60 x 80cm, limited to 5 pieces, framed or mounted on alu-Dibond behind matte plexiglas.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For me as a photographer, all these buildings are artworks. In Singularity I reduced the buildings to themselves. Like a sculpture on a pedestal in a clean gallery or museum.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part is to search for the right angle, without much distraction or objects that I have to delete or cut out in photoshop.
