DESIGN NAME: Hokusais Dinner
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art
INSPIRATION: The octopus, the kraken, is one of the most elegant creatures from my point of view. The structures and the patterns of the skin, the suction cups make the animal absolutely unique.
The main inspiration comes from the painting "The dream of the fisherman's wife", where the wife of a fisherman is in erotic embrace with a giant octopus.
I wanted to give the story another aspect, a humoristic touch. After the erotic dream the wife cookes her husband an octopus as kaind of reminiscense to her dream...
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Hokusai's Dinner. A little tribute to Katsushika Hokusai, Japanese artist, who created the picture "The dream of the fisherman's wife".
I wanted to create pictures wich are usable as artworks, but for food-concerns too.
If you read the title and know about Katsushika Hokusai's painting, you get another layer of understanding to my work, maybe a smile too.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: I had to "cast" a lot of octopusses to find the right "models". In the workflow I had up to 10 different creatures in the studio. Then I had to arrange them, set the light and go!
Afterwards I cooked most of the octopusses because I did not want to just throw them away after the shooting. We had a lot of octopus-dinners these days and I leard a lot of tasty recipes...
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: January - February 2017
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Photography and Photo Manipulation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Studio light (Profoto), Nikon D800E, different lenses.
Studio setting with a dark/black background and a rough wooden ground.
I took different octopuses from the fishmarket and prepared them for the shooting. There were about 5 studio sessions until I was satisfied with the outcome.
By the way: I just prepared the octopuses with water, so I could cook them after the shooting. If you are looking for an octopus recipe, just ask me, I know them all...

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research of the work of painter Katsushika Hokusai but also food photography and still liofe photography.
I do a lot of still life and wanted to combine all my favourite aspects of photography.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was the "casting" of the animals and then the post-production. To find the right use of colors, enhancement, etc. I decided for a so called "dodge & Burn" coler correction, where the black parts are a bit overexposed.
The shooting was quite easy, I knew which light I wanted to use, prepared the background and had not much time for the shooting. About 2 hours, because I wanted to keep the octopus fresh.
