| DESIGN NAME: House of Escher PRIMARY FUNCTION: Photographs INSPIRATION: In times of an endless flood of images and greed for perfection I see the necessity to look into an entirely different direction: The images is not enough, it is the abstraction and the individual view of the beholder, together they reach into and below the surface of customary patterns of conception. It is all about the evocation of thoughts, associations, emotions and memories. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As a photographer, mainly working as an artist, I am looking for the the unusual to take the ordinary from reality. This minimal and beautiful staircase is inside the "Service Center for Students" at University of Cologne, designed by Schuster Architects. This is a very good example for my work: I am looking for the right angles to create pictures where the beholder stops and asks "What is ist? Where is it?". The mind-bending angles of the staircase, evoking the quetsions above, reminded me strongly of the surrealistic drawings by MC Escher, therefore the title. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First was the research for the builing, then I had to request the permission to take pictures in the building. That was the official way. Then the shooting: At an evening, when nearly noone was in the building, I did not want to disturb anyone and I wanted a clear and empty staircase. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in autumn 2015, I took the pictures in November. The building is in Cologne, Germany and part of the university. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Fine Art Photography Paper, either framed or mounted behind matte plexiglass. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: - 30 x 30cm (limited to 50 pieces) Fine Art Print - 80 x 80cm (limited to 10 pieces), Fine Art Print or mounted/framed - 120 x 120cm (limited to 5 pieces), Fine Art Print or mounted/framed TAGS: Fine Art, staircase,stairs,min RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research was the search for the right angles and in a study of the work of MC Escher to create that abstract and surrealistic look. CHALLENGE: Everybody was very helpful and the architects and the decan of the university where quite amazed when they saw the final pictures.
