DESIGN NAME: Engineering Base
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office Interior
INSPIRATION: The intention was to go opposite direction from the original engineering base which theme is sharp and edgy. In different to strong contrasts of materials and color scheme, concept of the new office became mindfulness. Not only does it improve productivity but also entertains users as they work in both environment. Quiet and independent work style of engineers was another inspiration. By incorporating Zen spirit, sophisticated, comfortable and attentive working space is created.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Indeed Meguro, a second engineering base for Indeed Japan, is a mindful and attentive work space for engineers. As leading tech companies incorporate Zen spirits for mindfulness educational programs, mindfulness is incorporated into interior design. Peaceful and calm atmosphere helps concentrating and improve productivity, which were the main objectives of client. Combination of sound absorbing materials, soft color scheme and indirect lighting at open space created mindful developing environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Mobility, reduce waste and lower physical effort were core ideas for sustainable usage of this office. Motion sensor lighting system is used throughout the office for efficiency in terms of energy and cost. It also reduces stress of office managers. We successfully reduced paper consumption by introducing ceramic plates for their daily company lunch. Additionally, mobility of furniture enables change layout easily and cushions made from recycled sailcloth are placed in resting area.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2016 in Tokyo, Japan and finished in January 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Custom made mobile hexagon workstation is made of corrugated cardboard covered with sound absorbing felt fabric. It is easily to move by using zipper on the side. Since it gives enough privacy, we decided to minimize wall to keep visibility. Moreover, we designed to improve quality of life. For instance, we adjusted luminosity to minimize gap between brightness of PC screens and the surroundings for healthy vision, and to promote blood circulation food warmer is installed. Mindfulness and mobility implemented by combining these details.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The total space of this project is 1720 square metre.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First, we used beacon application to scale population of each area and how people transfer area by creating heat map. As a second, proper sound absorbing method to create workstation to concentrate was found by creating many prototypes. Combining these research results lead to unique hexagon work station unit with latest ergonomics furniture and in-house design sound absorbing partition. Impacts of unique layout fits perfectly for engineers’ work style, and elevated performance and happiness overall.
CHALLENGE: Twist of this project was to design temporal yet attractive secondary engineering base. Since major premise is relocation, combination of 2 contradicting elements, mobility and richness of the space, was the major obstacle to conquer. By designing one-step detachable partition in-house, we achieved quality and mobility at the same time.
