DESIGN NAME: ResoNet Baitasi
PRIMARY FUNCTION: An interactive light sculpture
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the vibrant nightlife scene at the Baitasi Hutong district of Beijing, ResoNet awakens from a dormant sleep to shine once more. Emerging from its origins in the forests of Cumbria, ResoNet morphs to float over an urban environment, immersing the public and street in an efflorescent visual of flashing lights.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ResoNet is an interactive light sculpture exhibited in the Baitasi hutong district during Beijing Design Week in 2015, which illuminates the public realm in response to vibration stimuli. Designed by Creative Prototyping Unit, a team made up of multidisciplinary designers, ResoNet takes its name from the combination of resonance and network. The showcased product is an evolution of the competition winning entry for Designboom Bright LED in 2007, which was realised at FRED 07 art festival in the UK.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Suspended in a tree canopy, the web structure drapes above the public realm like a vortex. Two illuminated rings support a network of vibration sensors and LED nodes that are fixed at some key intersections on the tensile web, these nodes detect vibrations produced by human and natural activity. Be it the sway of a tree, or a passing car, the energy is transformed into light that resonates across the structure, and whilst the rings provide a constant flow for passersby, resonet bursts to life shining brighter depending on the strength of the vibration.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Time: 2015.09.26-10.07
Location: Fu Cheng Men Nei Beijie Street, Xicheng District Beijing (Baitasi area)
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material: 3D Print (ABS, bottom/top ring), LED, elastic core, steel cable, sensors, solar power supply, and others.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 4m diameters width x 2.8m height
TAGS: prototype, interactive, Light installation, LED Light, ResoNet, generative, algorithmic, parametric
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The name Resonet is an amalgamation of the words resonance and network. Resonet is an interactive light installation which is to explore the boundaries between art, culture, architecture and technology to create physical and ephemeral conditions.
CHALLENGE: The bottom and top florescent rings are made of multiple connected segments due to the limited size of 3D print machine. The detailing of integrating wire cables, LED strip light and multiple segments is very challenge in terms of structural integrity as one piece.
