DESIGN NAME: Tulpi-Arabesque
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Waste bin
INSPIRATION: Tulpi-Arabesque creates an atmosphere of "thousand-and-one night" that will support people to enjoy throwing away their waste.The Tulpi-Arabesque is constructed from a solid round steel post with a welded container tray. A separate inside waste liner provides a large capacity for waste. The whole is enclosed by 2 curved composite petals. Tulpi-Arabesque is designed to withstand the stringent requirements for public furniture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Litter is an eyesore. It is therefore important that people are encouraged to dispose their waste in the appropriate bins. These bins should be visible and recognizable. They must also be part of the environment. Traveling through the Middle East, I had the idea to design a special bin for this area with its beautiful and intriguing colors, architecture, mosaics and graphic patterns. As a result the Tulpi-Arabesque.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Tulpi-Arabesque can be equipped with different kind of colorate innertray's. To empty the bin, unlock the two petals at the right side for easy access to the removable inner tray. Also an optional full electronic opening and closure system is available.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in March 2015 in Nieuwegein,The Netherlands.
Prototyping finished in November 2016 in Nieuwegein,The Netherlands.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We did exploratory and testing research. We visited and looked at the current streetscape in multiple cities of United Arabic Emirates. Internet: if the design already existed. We participated in a Dutch government seminar about litter to obtain observations and comments of experts, and reach a wider audience. Several prototypes were shown at various fairs and events. Vandal proof and safety tests were also performed.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to keep the shape of a tulip and built in all features. Also to use a good and working fold-system, to let the petals close properly.
