PRIMARY FUNCTION: Loudspeaker
INSPIRATION: The Möbius strip is a concept from the mathematical field known as topology. For our research, we studied casing geometrical properties and spatial relations change of shape or size of figures and the way in which constituent parts are interrelated or arranged.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Möbius, a Loudspeaker Inspired by Mathematics.
The Möbius strip is a concept from the mathematical field known as topology. We discovered that providing a Möbiusian shaped enclosure containing drivers, and cooperatively mounting the housing in association with a uniquely constructed reflector, allowed us to achieve a loudspeaker system which controls and shapes the ultimate acoustical waveform produced thereby. The result is purity, natural tonal balance and dynamic expression.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Music distribution has changed. This loudspeaker is for High Quality today's music. We want to minimize the system to the essentials: the audio source and the speakers. They can be used with any device that plays music: computer, mobile phone, personal player, video system, docking station, network player, CD player, streaming client, TV, Hi-Fi audio system.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in beginning of 2016. Technology test and measurements end of 2016. Limited production should start in June.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In order to achieve the quality and precision of injection molding, with the speed and design freedom of 3D Printing, we are using Vacuum Casting - a copying technique used for the production of small series of functional plastic parts. Using two-component polyurethanes and silicone molds, Vacuum Casting is known for its fast production of high-quality prototypes or end-use products.
Vacuum Casting begins by producing a master model, typically using Laser Sintering, with a high-quality surface finish. Then a silicone mold is produced by casting silicone around the master copy, partially under vacuum to avoid air bubbles. After curing, the silicone mold is cut according to pre-defined parting planes and the master is removed, leaving a cavity to make copies.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This model is the standard one. Diameter x height x footprint: 70 x 110 x 45 cm. 15 kg (incl. legs). Typical 23 watts. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: By providing a Mobius shaped housing or enclosure containing one or more drivers or speakers motors, and cooperatively mounting the housing in association with a uniquely constructed reflector, a loudspeaker system is achieved which controls and shapes the ultimate acoustical waveform produced thereby. The loudspeaker system of the present invention controls and distributes the acoustical energy of the driver and housing, while shaping the acoustical energy field into a true holographic pattern, within the system's power bandwidth. By employing the present invention, the point of summation of the holographic pattern is approximately eight times the diameter of the reflector, thereby achieving the desired hemispherical polar coverage patterns.
CHALLENGE: Challenge in design is pleasure. Constraints are guidelines. We had one philosophy and one goal: keep the signal pure and make the best active speakers ever. With no amplifier. No speaker cables. No compromise. Technological advances in the music industry (Digital, streaming, wireless etc.…) have created a world of opportunity, which we are seizing to create an entirely new category to improve the way we socially discover, share, listen and experience music. The speaker is the first piece of a larger suite for an intelligent home starting from pleasure and feelings rather than utilities.
