DESIGN NAME: Trend Micro Cairo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office
INSPIRATION: The location was the main driver for the design plan where Dalia Sadany has always had an affinity towards the Islamic Mafrouka choosing it to be the core element of the entire theme. Looking at the project from an eye bird view, you would see how she played around with the islamic pattern. Aside from reviving the Arabic feel, the use of broken lines across the design tricks the eye that the space is bigger and makes you lose the feel of the boundaries. Encapsulating the broken lines all across the design evokes the feel of connection to the space elements as you move along.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The entire place feels like a one big coherent space and this was achieved by encapsulating the broken lines across the entire theme borrowing the spirit of the Islamic patterns. The place is user friendly where the interior design successfully created a work place that blurs the lines between being professional and enjoying a hip trendy youthful spirit. The design encourages collaboration, casual interaction, and communication gracefully.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To maintain the flow in this space, that abides several usages and functionalities , the use of glass and mirrors has been designed to mathematically calculate reflections and visual angles to ensure visibility from all regions of the premises to inhibit enclosures and enhance the magnitude of the space. Interactions and functionality was a germane factor, leading to detailed attention to flexible furnishings throughout the vicinity, facilitating versatile usability.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2016 and was completed in October 2016. Trend Micro Cairo is located at the American University in Cairo's (AUC) Greek Campus, once part of the university before relocating now being used as a technology and innovation park.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research on the psychological influences and requirements for office and educational usage was conducted to combine the practicality of office spaces with the positivism in the flow recommended for educational spaces. Also researched was the fusion of influences regarding the nature of the company's activity as a technology company and the history of this significant building in the glamorous down-town Cairo. All these aspects needed to be handled with professionalism to manifest each regardless from contradictory influences yet needed to be mirrored together fluently.
CHALLENGE: The way the space was originally built posed many challenges but the main challenge was to create more physical space than actual as well as impose an impression of fluidity. This was successfully achieved by creating a mezzanine and extensions as well as the design elements, color choices and the overall interiors which don't force movement into straight lines. The design plan cleverly manipulated loss of dimensions to overcome the ordeal of involving several functions within a designated fairly compact space.
