| DESIGN NAME: Between PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring INSPIRATION: The geometric designs in Islamic art are often built on combinations of repeated squares and circles, which may be overlapped and interlaced, as can arabesques (with which they are often combined), to form intricate and complex patterns, including a wide variety of tessellations. These may constitute the entire decoration, may form a framework for floral or calligraphic embellishments, or may retreat into the background around other motifs. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The complexity and variety of patterns used evolved from simple stars and lozenges in the ninth century, through a variety of 6- to 13-point patterns by the 13th century, and finally to include also 14- and 16-point stars in the sixteenth century. In this series, I have tried my best to bring back old patterns and architectural elements and redefine them in order to repeat the past with a new perspective. Actually it’s the difference among this series that makes it repeat. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: I’ve been aiming to transform the traditional geometry into a modern one, by changing and mostly deconstructing it. The philosophy of Always series is redefining patterns and repeating the difference; deconstructing, reversing and deforming the meaningful logic of old geometries and then reconstructing them. Hemmati believes that many Iranian geometries of the past are not malleable and are bound within themselves. But the pieces in Always series are flexible and have different formal functionalities because of the deconstruction created in these geometries. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It took me a year and a half to complete this project. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This ring was made from gold SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The width is 23mm and the length is 26mm. TAGS: Ring, Jewlery, Contemprary, art, aplied art RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For me, these works come from the repetition concept of Gilles Deleuze (contemporary French philosopher), in a sense that this repetition is not a repetitive recurrence of form, because repeating something is its anew beginning, so that the past recurs with a new insight. In fact, it’s the difference that generates repetition. Traditional Iranian motifs and elements have constant presence in all her works, which Hemmati combines them with contemporary subjects and potentials of fabrication technology. CHALLENGE: In this project my biggest challenge was to make connection between something so practical and also wearable with something geometrical.
