DESIGN NAME: Design in Italy in Project Groups
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Thesis Book
INSPIRATION: During my studies I developed a keen interest in the radical design of the 1970s, and the total break from tradition this movement represented. This led to my interest in reconstructing the pieces of a story with distant origins, the history of groups of designers who were able to start again from scratch by imagining new ways to create designs and put them into action.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Design in Italy in Project Groups from 1960 to 1990 is a historical and analytical research project that presents a study of the experiences of Italian design groups from the 1960s onwards. The aim is to analyse the developments and the importance they have had in the context of national and international design and architecture, and to create tools for the understanding of the phenomenon in its entirety.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The chapters about the groups are divided by decades, the reader can follow the index order or jump from a chapter to another to search information on specific groups. Moreover, the data regarding groups, places and trends are summarized in graphic diagrams created to give to the reader a brief overview of the facts.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The thesis was developed at the end of the degree course in Industrial Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Università degli studi di Roma Sapienza, under the guidance of Professor Vincenzo Cristallo. Work on the project began in Rome in December 2013, and was completed in January 2015.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This book provides a series of tools for a general understanding of the artistic and cultural context in Italy from the 1960s to the 1990s, such as information on the history and production of each design group, and biographies of the figures involved, illustrated with summary graphics, and a reference bibliography. The data were collected from original publications, monographs, and magazines of the period, and interviews with key figures such as Andrea Branzi, Ugo La Pietra and Gianni Pettena.
CHALLENGE: One of the most demanding stages of the research project involved finding the historic sources, for two reasons; firstly, the rarity of certain specific materials, dating back to the 1960s and 1970s, such as limited editions of magazines, or publications with a limited print run; secondly, the enormous quantity of material that needed to be consulted, due to the extended time frame that the research involves. Retrieving detailed biographical information about many of the figures involved proved equally challenging.
