| DESIGN NAME: Latin Rhythm PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the design was the cultural backgrounds of the clients. The couple brought with them the sensibilities of Venezuela and Cuba. Calderin sought to translate the owners’ vision into something with both the joy of living in the warmer climates and the sleek South Florida styling that plays to any cultural aesthetic. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Latin Rhythm Residence began as a 3 bedroom renovation, and turned into a 5 bedroom conversion with a gazebo and pool lounge. The entry and sunken living room feature a cantilever fireplace wall covered in white onyx and a mirrored waterfall nestled in a stacked travertine wall. Wenge wood is used throughout the walls of the residence, to give a warm feel, complimented with pops of color seen in the upholstery. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Rich materials flow from one space to the other to give the design continuity. Window treatments were kept sheer and light to allow the outdoor views while fully closed. The backgrounds were kept neutral with soft tones and warm woods while the pops of color added in the artwork, accessories and accent furniture pieces bring a fun element into each space. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started around October 2013 and finished in November 2014. The project is located in Miami, Florida. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The technological aspect used within this residence was the ethanol gas fireplace. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The residence is 372 square-meters. TAGS: Miami, South Florida, Residence, Interior Designer, Design, Residential, Pepe Calderin Design, Contemporary Residence, Designer Home RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Pepe Calderin Design was contracted to transform a 20 year old house, three bedrooms, into a five bedrooms dream home with a cabana room, an outdoor gazebo, 56-foot-long pool with a spa and soaking bar. A sense of space was very important to the client, and this is reflected in the open layout provided in this 4,000 square foot home. This waterside property gave the opportunity to work with the highest level of finishes without obstructing the view of the lake. CHALLENGE: The home was about 20 years old, bringing with it challenges for the designer. The ceilings jutted in various angles while the stairway was not up to code. Calderin moved the front entry, designed a new stairway, and used his signature ceiling design elements.
