DESIGN NAME: Soft Tiles
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Decorative cushions
INSPIRATION: A pile of old cement tiles in a construction dumpster on the street was the spark that ignited this project. It saddened me that such a cultural and artistic heritage was slowly disappearing. I began wondering how to give those beautiful patterns a new life, how to make them accessible to everyone everywhere. So I thought that a cushion would be the perfect vehicle to bring the essence of Catalan modernist tiles in every home.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Soft Tiles are a contemporary interpretation of the Catalan hydraulic tiles.
The collection consists of six patterns in two different colour palettes. The flexibility of their design allows for many combinations giving everyone, everywhere, the possibility to enjoy the beauty of the marvellous, unique Barcelona’s modernist floors.
Soft Tiles cushions are made in Spain using 100 percent organic cotton and non toxic ink.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: I decided to reinterpret the classic design and colour of the hydraulic modernist tiles in order to make Soft Tiles suitable for a classic as well as for a modern interior decoration. I also thought it would make them more accessible if sold in two options: with or without filling. This would make shipping cheaper and people would be able to use their old cushion fillings making the product more sustainable. For this reason, I decided to use a widely used and common cushion size of 40 x 40cm.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Soft Tiles first prototypes were made in 2013 in Barcelona, while production and sale started in July 2016, also in Barcelona.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Soft Tiles are entirely manufactured in Spain.
The 100 percent organic cotton fabric is digitally printed with non toxic ink. In the same workshop, after printing, the fabric is cut and sewed by hand.
I wanted these cushions to feel smooth and soft to the touch, keeping the colour vibrant and pure to the eye. For this reason, I opted for a 280gsm high quality cotton twill gabardine.
An invisible zipper is sewed to the pillow case opening.
The cushion filling is 100 percent polyester, also made in Spain.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research was conducted on two sides: materials and design. How valuable to people is sustainability vs. low price has also been investigated. Prototypes have been made with different patterns on different fabrics. Resistance, shrinkage and durability of fabric and printing have been thoroughly tested. Patterns and colours have been submitted to a sample of 20 people in order to gather and rank their preferences. The final product is the result of two years of research.
CHALLENGE: Transforming a hard concrete tile into a soft cushion has been the hardest part of the creative process. I wanted to find the right patterns and colours, make sure they worked together and transpose them on the right fabric, smooth but strong and environmentally sustainable. For environmental and ethical reasons, I wanted to keep the production process in Spain, maintaining the costs as low as possible while ensuring our customers a top quality product.
