| DESIGN NAME: Kwik Set PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multi Purpose Hand Press INSPIRATION: The idea for developing Kwik Set came from the desire to solve two problems for the everyday leather crafter which includes limited capability of current arbor presses in the marketplace and the lack of space to store them.We sought to increase the arbor press functionality by combining tasks like cutting leather, stamp designs and set hardware into one simple piece of machinery, eliminating the need for several machines. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Kwik Set is a intuitive machine that simplifies the lives of everyday leather crafters and makes the most of your small space. It enables users to cut leather, imprint or emboss designs and set hardware with 20 plus customized dies and adapters. Its ease of use includes an adjustable collar, removable table plate, and single-handed operation. The small footprint and simplistic aesthetic compliments any space. Whether you are making a quick mock-up or production run, this versatile tool is your best solution for fabricating any leather product. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Before operating the machine the user needs to follow a four step instruction manual to assemble and secure the press to a suitable work surface. Operating the machine is easy. Simply rotate the adjustment collar up and down to change the height for different attachments and operations. Then use the full stroke of the handle each time to ensure the function is properly performed. The handle will come to a complete stop when fully lowered. A removable table plate functions as a fence guide and backing for stamping and embossing operations. To reposition the table plate, loosen the handle by rotating it counter clockwise. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design process began in February of 2015 and completed by January 2016 in Ivan Leathercraft Headquarter in Taipei, Taiwan. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The hand press main frame is ASTM A 48 Class 40 gray cast iron, this casting is capable of withstanding extremely high forces and built for prolonged use in production environments. Critical components like the ram and bolt assembly use heat treated steel. The integrated and removable table plate gives users an excellent work surface, which is not found on most machines of its kind. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Machine Dimensions: 310mmx 150mm x 620mm. Package Dimensions: 550mm x 370mm x 120mm. Machine Weight: 8kg or 18lbs. Competitive samples were tested and evaluated for functionality, performances and price points. Extensive force testing and output force readings were recorded on all tool attachments and adapters. CHALLENGE: The design challenge of this project is to create a user friendly, high compression arbor press that solves user needs and improves the typical industrial machine aesthetic and scale. The concept is to make the press an integral component of any workspace, which the user can accomplish many different leather production processes, beyond just a periphery item that you pull out once in a while. The form and functions have been carefully integrated into the final design to meet these design criteria.
