DESIGN NAME: Honey
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Funny Honey
INSPIRATION: Nowadays, there are a variety of food packages and their usages are also broadened, but a lot of them pay too much attention to attracting consumers, which leads to huge waste and impossibility for re-use. You may ask why we have connected the honey with checkers. When we look at the honeycomb, we associate it with the checkerboard as they are very similar to each other and common in daily life. So we integrate them finally.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a package for honey. It looks like a honeycomb and it can be turned into a checkerboard after being folded. Each separated package can be used as a pawn and the number of honey bottles is in line with that of the pawns and all of them are distinguished by caps of different colors. The package has broken the traditional ways as we can entertain with families and friends after enjoying the honey. It is a innovative design for food packages.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The packaging is in folded structure with two layers and when the folding part is fully unfolded, a complete checkerboard is formed. There are 60 glass bottles containing honey inside which are divided into 6 colors on average, 10 for each color. All of them are distinguished by the bottle caps, moreover, they can also be used as pawns of the checkers. The interaction between people can be enhanced when enjoying the honey, which is conductive to increasing the fun of the product and value for re-using of the packaging.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was commenced in September 2016 and completed in November in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research object is the multifunctional package. In the design process, the designers have tried many ways to make consumers reserve the packagers for re-use after enjoying the honey. In this way, we may exert the multifunctional nature of the package to the maximum extent and avoid waste of material. The multifunctional food package has positive impact on environmental protection and it also attaches great importance to the openness of mind and interaction between people.
CHALLENGE: Firstly, for environmental protection, the selection of material is a difficult. The material for outer package must be tough and it must be able to withstand folding for many times without breaking. The separate packaging inside must be space-saving.
Secondly, it is also hard to design the package as it is a process for constructing the structure. We need to consider how to arrange the layout and folding the package which will be turned into a checkerboard so that it is more easy to understand and transport.
