DESIGN NAME: Let It Play
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Musical Device
INSPIRATION: Human interaction with nature, besides being a way of fulfilling life requirements, has caused joy and pleasance. We intended to give a new face to this interaction by exploring different events, traditions and cultures. Hanami or the bloom of cherry blossoms in Japan is when the city is at its most beautiful look. Bloomy cherry trees with beautiful white and pink blossoms all over them, and many wondering in the air, provide special times for people. This was an inspiration for us to design an interactive product named Let It Play. The music notes are metaphors of cherry blossoms which plays in random melodies by trees.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: When wind blows or tree branches shake by natural factors, people can hear a melody from a random combination of notes in a particular scale, a Pentatonic scale for instance. By any change in wind direction or intensity and obviously in branches’ movement’s orders, infinite ear catching and pleasant melodies will play. Let It Play has two flexible slings with a diameter of five millimeters which by twisting them around the branches, the product will attach to the trees.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Let It play changes the way we interact with trees and nature. with this device we can listen to melodies that are composed and played by nature. every thing functions automatically and there is nothing to do but listening to what the nature is composing instantly for us.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2016 in Tehran and finished in January 2016. a prototype of the final product (with a different power supply) was made, tested and exhibited in Iran University Of Science and Technology and was approved by university's professors.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Inside Let It Play is an electrical board consists of: Micro controller, Sensor, Player and Power Supply. The brain of it is An Arduino micro controller (AVR based). It gathers data, analyses and sends a command to the player module. A gyroscope sensor senses the motion. Implementing a SD-Card reader let Let it play have a flexible possibility to play various melodies. The new flexible technologies of solar cells are used as power supply. Flexible clamps are made of metal wires covered by silicon. Caps and the main body are made of ABS. body surface is covered with flexible solar cells.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 70mm*25mm*25mm and flexible clamps with a length of 150mm and diameter of 5mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: we did library research about: cultures, traditions and occasions in different countries. being professional musicians, we had sufficient information about implementing musical notes. we did some detailed research about east-Asian music.
we had detailed observations about tree sizes and their branches movement orders before designing the body and some other affected details such as sensor sensitivity adjustment.
by adding an electronic engineer we made sure to properly handle the electronic aspect. for testing our concept in practice we made a prototype and it worked flawless.
CHALLENGE: our main challenges were:
how to attach the product to trees (considering tree growth and branches' size change)
Form (we spent a lot of time on form making to make sure it fits with the tree form and compatible with production limits due to power supply issues)
power supply (using electricity wires would have made many interaction and safety issues, so we took advantage of the new flexible solar cells)
