DESIGN NAME: More Is Different
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookshelf
INSPIRATION: I wanted to make a bookshelf that was both simple in design and sustainable.
But books constitute a heavy load so I tried to think about the project more from a carpenter's point of view than that of a joiner's.
It was important to think about weight distribution and choose the sections and angles in line with the weight they would be carrying.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Retrieving or storing a book will never be the same again.
More resistant yet made with less material and more durable than a standard bookshelf.
Each book stands alone without the need of support from others. It's, therefore easier to arrange them by group and keep them organised. Books no longer lean to one side so they don't get damaged.
Modifiable according to the size of the books.
The structure allows us to either display or hide accessories: labels, lighting, wiring, etc.
Easy to assemble
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: USING MID
Retrieving or storing a book will never be the same again.
Each book can stand alone as well as in a group without the need of support from other books. Volumes are easy to organize and retrieving a novel seems like the most natural thing to do.
In addition to this, because there is less surface area, MID needs less cleaning.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2016, in Rennes, France.
Several different plans were developed until the realisation of a prototype was completed in October.
The model was then re-designed and re-worked in digital 3D.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In much the same way as a carpentry, calculations needed to take into account the weight of the books, the dimensions and the resistance of the structure.
The sleepers that hold the books are much like purlins, the horizontal sleepers like battens and the two sides like posts.
Eight wooden pegs hold the entire framework together and add a discrete reminder of the original concept.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 395 mm. Depth 1.500 mm. Height 1940 mm.
The purlins are slightly tilted towards the bottom, the battens to the top in order to optimise holding the books in place.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I wanted to write books but no longer had any space left in my bookcase.
There were three solutions available:
- Get rid of some of the books I already had.
- Give up on the idea of writing.
- Design a bookcase that would hold more books.
I opted for the latter. I quickly found that the results of my research and the fabrication of the bookcase that followed far exceeded the aim I first set out to accomplish.
A good thing really, since I haven't at all had the time to write.
CHALLENGE: Creating MID was easy.
At this present moment in time, the challenge is to promote MID in order to finalise the production development with an entreprise fully invested in the project.
