DESIGN NAME: Fashion Store - La Palette
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fashion Retail
INSPIRATION: Drawing inspiration from traditional embroidery, the design uses hoops as a metaphor to unify the entire space in a simple yet elegant manner. The hoops are arrayed carefully to generate a range of patterns that would form visual enclosures, enabling one to celebrate the craft of embroidery throughout the journey. The design takes clues from its context, the art districts of Mehrauli precinct, to create a fusion of contemporary and ethnic, rigid and lax elements to generate its visual appeal.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The label- ‘La Palette' with expertise in Indian ethnic wear on likes and lines of celebratory garments, provides bespoke services to walk in clients. The brand renders a new identity through contemporary application of traditional embroidery. A retail store tries to connect its products in an extremely appealing and bold way to leave an everlasting impression on the customers. The design presents a glimpse of the untold story behind each and every hand crafted garment on display in the store.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The entrance to the store is through a narrow passage, an arcade in white created by an illusion with mirrors transforming a 4 feet entry to seem double its width. This grand entry transits to a contemporary fashion studio depicting glamour and luxury. Respecting the functional requirements of the store, the space was sequentially divided in zones or rooms. These were not, physical rooms, but a space contained within jaali partitions, that would showcase a particular range of clothing. The central display podium in black acts as a visual node to the various sections of the store, holding together the layers of spatial configurations and materiality.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in nov 2016 and finished in dec 2016 in New Delhi, India and the store is currently operational

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Embroidery hoops were an appropriate choice of material for such a store. The strong circular form allowed the formation of a range of geometric patterns, including floral formations. Layers of hoops were arrayed to make geometric patterns of varying density. Lighting played an important role apart from enhancing the display of garments. Through the shadows it would cast, these geometric patterns could be replicated.
