DESIGN NAME: Multicultural Temple
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Symbol of freedom
INSPIRATION: Every day we become overwashed with news about war. War with his refugees and warvictims. Most of the wars are based on a conflict about religion. While each religion has nearly the same basic rules. We all want love and a life in peace.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The model communicates the human strive for survival. For centuries, myths, gods and religions have offered relief. At the same time, religions have brought conflicts and wars. This temple is meant as a save place for everyone regardsless of religion, or cultural background.
Each religion have its own identifiable element in the temple.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Sculpting is not about success or failure, there is no choice between do or do not work. It is a form of existence. During work the rock meets a flex, hammer and chisel and they create shapes under my hands. The artwork is made without preliminary sketches, the work arises from the essence that you are and as a result it offers you lots of fun and happiness during the process. When displayed people will hopefully get touched by it and see or feel the deeper sense of the work and if they look really intensely they might even be able to add a meaning to it.The multicultural Temple was created as a work of art. If this model is worked out in a building, the assistance of a construction company who can make calculations on location at the format of the building is required.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: In 1998 the sculpting started in Villa Vicosa in Portugal and after transportation the temple was finished in Tijnje, the Netherlands in 2002. It was exhibited in Bears in Friesland in 2010 and after that it found a semi permanent spot in Sculpture Park De Ulen in Tijnje, the Netherlands where it has been until 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This model of the Multicultural Temple is made in Portugese marble. It is like life, not pure white but spotted white marble. The centre of the temple shows a circle from very thin scoured marble. Light glimmers through. In this case light means knowledge and wisdom. It would be wonderful if a temple like this could be build in as many countries as possible, using local materials to reduce the impact on the environment. In addition, using local resources give a sense of recognition which in return gives a feeling of safety, protection and well-being.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The size of the marble model is 700 by 450 by 700 mm.
The size of the temple can be adjusted to the space available on the building site.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: By studying various religions and their temples I found the meanings of the different symbols like convex-protection, concave-inviting, spire-sky, staircase-steps for development. Circle with light-wisdom and knowledge. Because of its beauty marble is by far the most appropriate material to make the temple model, it is a translucent stone which allows the light to enter and that produces a soft and beautiful glow.
The mean purpose of the temple is that it can be a safe place for anyone regardless of religion or culture. A shelter to protect from harm and danger, a place where a certain togetherness can be build and where people can feel respected.
CHALLENGE: The question is where can these temples be build? In which countries does the government take time to think about the welfare of the suffering people? The places which really need safe temples usually have other priorities. They are either at war, not well-governed or too poor. Their main problems will have to be solved first before people will be interested in building safe temples.
