| DESIGN NAME: Life From Stone PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exhibition INSPIRATION: The initial inspiration was the Springfield's wine is made. Their philosophy is to create wine as naturally as possible. This inspired the idea to create a series of works using found objects and elements from the estate grounds. The simplicity of the artworks was a testament to their uncomplicated and hands on way of making wine allowing for an honest expression in both the artworks and the wine. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Each artwork was inspired and made from objects and elements collected on the estate grounds. The flagship piece entitled Life from Stone was named after the world famous Springfield Estate Sauvignon Blanc. Its name derives from the rocky soil in which it was grown. The work was made using photographs of a quartz rock and a piece of the actual grape vine fusing them together to create a human heart that symbolizes that this plant is the heart of Springfield Estate. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This print series is based on the narrative of where wine comes from. The complete series is exhibited in Estate tasting room. The idea is to take the tasters/viewers on a journey from Mother Earth to bottle. This journey will ultimately enhance the wine tasting experience by adding relevance to the unique product. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2016 in Robertson, South Africa and finished in August 2016 in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each artwork was made using physical elements collected at the estate. They were then photographed and using photoshop the works were completed. The idea was to use minimal amount of manipulation and rather use the organic nature of the objects to complete each image. This was a homage to their natural philosophy about wine making. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The original pieces are 1189mm x 841mm prints on 240gsm Pearl photographic paper. TAGS: wine, elements, fine art, photography, south africa, digital, wood, rock, nature RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The goal was to research the heart and soul of Springfield Estate of which the objective was to reflect the research in the artwork and to translate the natural values of Springfield to the viewer. I spent some time on the estate grounds, got to know the farm workers and observed how they would treat the plants with individual care. Data was collected through interaction and observation. I experimented with the found objects until I found the soul of each artwork. The results were strong, but simplistic iconic images that tells the philosophy of Springfield estate. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to find objects with the right characteristics for each piece. As mentioned, the idea was to keep the photo manipulation to a minimum. Too much manipulation would make the images/ideas seem forced, rather thank show the purity of nature. For the final execution the pieces were treated with a weathered look to once again emphasize the hand made approach of Springfield Estate. NAME: Chris Slabber PROFILE: Chris grew up in the small South African town of Oudtshoorn at the heart of the Klein Karoo. This is where he gained his love for Surrealism and surrounding genres. From a young age he’s been intrigued by the world of fine arts and became a student as soon as possible. Because of a love for technology, Chris started to apply his knowledge of fine arts in a more design orientated way. After 10 years of working as a professional in both commercial and fine arts, Slabber has received multiple awards for his work in Photo Manipulation and Mixed Media Illustration, of which the most prestigious was the 2014 Platinum award for Photo Manipulation at the A’ Design Awards in Como, Italy. |
