DESIGN NAME: Coativity
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive Jacket
INSPIRATION: I get inspired by nature. The nature celebrates life. It makes real contact by being connected to serve and to survive.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Coativity is a physical jacket combined with technology. This jacket can be linked with social media. Via an application on your mobile device you can select your preferences and based on them, the jacket communicates through light interaction with other people as soon as they are nearby and match your interests. This can be related to dating, networking, festivals or spontaneous meetings on the street. Connecting people in the real world. Encouraging real life interactions that lead to meaningful connections!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Interactive Jacket can be connected to internet by plugging the cable of the jacket into a mobile device. Via an app on a mobile device you can select from multiple applications, e.g. dating, networking, or festivals. Based on your selections and the chosen application the jacket will interact through light with people who are nearby and match your interests. In case of festivals the jacket will interact with the beats of the music, optionally only if this matches your favourite songs saved in your Spotify account, to enlarge the experience during a party.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in March 2016 in The Hague and finished in September 2016 in The Hague

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First step was research about the way we behave in social environments. We are diving more and more into the digital world. Initiating first contact was always the harders part in social interactions. Especially now in this digital oriented world of today. I came up with the idea of a piece of cloth that helps us to initiate that first contact. Mixing the digital world into the physical to support real contact in the real world. I started combining lights with fabric in different ways and discovered the most promising ways of bringing those worlds together. I build a rough and first prototype to test the results to discover the impact of a lighting cloth and how this impacts the surrounding. The focus was creating an attractive, integrally designed piece of cloth the consumer wants to wear, because fashion is closely related to the identity of the wearer.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to combine fabric and light in such way that it results in a nice and beautiful piece of cloth. In the end it should be worn by the consumer who only wants to wear it when it's attractive.
