DESIGN NAME: Flies Trap Lid
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee cup cover
INSPIRATION: According to WHO, every year, more than one million people die from vector borne diseases such as malaria and dengue carried by flies and other vectors.
This number really shocked me. So I decide to do something. But flies distributed in everywhere, it is difficult to eliminate at once, and once there is garbage, flies appeared again, this is a continuous battle. So we need a widely distributed, low cost and easy way to catch the flies. I keep thinking this until I drink a cup of coffee, then the idea came out.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design can prevent the spread of the virus at the lowest cost. It gives a second life to disposable coffee cups. When people finish drinking, just press the trap bottom before throwing. The flies will be easily attracted by the residual coffee smell.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: After drinking coffee or drinks as usual, just press a small button, the trapping hole appears.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2016 and finished in December 2016 in Toulouse, France.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design is a coffee or drink cup lid, but the purpose is not to improve its use as a lid, but to give it a second life, used to catch flies. By reading academic papers, we got a full understand the habits of flies. Then we made a few prototypes to do experiment in order to define the detailed dimensions, color and structure. The result shows that with this structure, flies can easily get in but have a very low rate to get out. If this design is widely disseminated, death number of vector-borne diseases can be reduced each year.
CHALLENGE: Button design is the most complex part. Not only need to meet the function, but also need to consider the user's finger size, the possibility of processing, the cost, the transport, and of course the beautiful appearance.
