DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Billy Julie

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Mask

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration came from micro-expression. It is an expression that may occur to everyone every day at everywhere. Billy, which is usually used as a synonym of multiple personalities, was used to imply the complexity that possible hides behind a face. The complexity is neutral, and the interaction with the world is up to the interpretation of individuals. On the other side, Julie stands for a much warmer personality.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This mask was created to make people examine one's own conscience. A mask is an interface and an interpreter. It reflects on oneself, and each small component contributes to the micro-expressions that show up the emotions what people usually hide. The interaction consists of three parts: 1) looking inside the mask as an examination of oneself; 2) putting on the mask and experiencing the world through the asymmetric openings; and 3) standing in front of a mirror to sense how you are seen.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This installation is intended to be placed vertically on a table top or a shelf, at which eye level are located at the same height as the mask. The interaction consists of three parts: 1) look inside the mask as an examination of oneself; 2) put on the mask and explore the world through the asymmetric openings; and 3) stand in front of a mirror to sense how you are seen as how you look at people.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started from scratch since 2010 in Taipei, Taiwan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The 3D shape of mask is designed by parametric adjustment of the orientations of a ladder-like geometry. The base shape is an entangled curve with partitions. Because of the complication of the final installation and the delicate part of members (0.15 mm), selected Laser Sintering (SLS) Rapid-Prototyping (RP) technology was applied to create a nylon base model in white color. In order to create two contrasting personalities, Billy (an academic name for 21 personalities) and Julie (a pseudo name for a general personality) are represented by additional two-tone paint outside and inside the installation. The paints are further materialized with rusted metal finish.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
28cm*19cm*10cm with nylon material inside, coated with layers of metallic paint

TAGS:
mask, metaphor, micro-expression

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Micro-expression is kind of look which shows up when people try to hide emotion. It’s short and is created subconsciously. The expression consists of seven types, such as disgust, anger, fear, sadness, happiness, surprise, and contempt. (Science of People, http://www.scienceofpeople.com/2013/09/g uide-reading-microexpressions/, 2016) The metaphor of mask was created to enhance and to exaggerate the micro-expressions explicitly, as a new form as communication.

CHALLENGE:
Human face is a very compact display system. All kinds of emotions are displayed on a single and small footage with various subtle adjustments of muscles. While a person does not want to express oneself explicitly, a mask becomes a perfect interface without a clear identity. It can be a mirror of what a person has been through. An interface is everything. A mask is usually perceived upfront. People usually care if a mask fit well. Can this perception be changed? What if the general impression is reversed to also care what a mask looks inside and to think of the nature of wearing a mask installation. So a mask is created to make people think (before putting it on) and to examine one's own conscience, not from how people think of a person from the other side of the mask. Now a mask becomes an interpreter. The reversed mask installation is created purposely, in which people will discover the conflict between the convex face and the concaved outward appearance. It is a mask for personal use. A person will first see the mask and attach it to face, as an integration of appearance and emotion. Technically, the dimension of this design (28*19cm*10cm) does not fit in a small size RP machine. For the strength, quality, and surface finishing of the final model, SLS becomes the only choice available to make the small details feasible. As a result, the contrast between the sizes of various members successfully helps the illustration of expressions on the same mask. Formal test was made on lower resolution and ABS. The result was a model with much less depth and identities. Financially, the initial price quote by a local service bureau was over 6500 US dollars. The price was reduced into half and even more for the second and third quote provided by different service bureaus.
