DESIGN NAME: Julia
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Accent Chair
INSPIRATION: The Julia chair was inspired by a circular paper armlet, which was playfully twisted and bent, like a mobius strip. The armlet's new form was partnered with ash wood slats as material, which are typically used as wall and accents.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ash wood slats were meticulously placed in a radial array, supported by two worn black iron bars and screws to complete the form and function of Julia. Each material was carefully thought of, measured and calculated - the number and sizes of each wood slat, the gaps in between, the distance between the inner and outer bars, and even the holes on the slats. In addition, the clean look and thinness of the cushion compliments Julia and even without it, it is still able to maintain its comfort and solid stance.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: With only three months before the showcase of Julia chair at the Manila Fame October 2015, the manufacturer and I decided that I submit an actual scale mock-up of the chair so that it would easier for them to visualize my design. I worked on old cartons and foam boards as wood slats, masking tapes, round bars, and an actual chair as the main structure. Despite my limited resources, skills and a few trial and errors, I was able to submit it to them.
On the manufacturer’s end, while they have the resources, it is the technique that is challenging as it is their first time to work on it and again, a deadline to catch. Without compromising craftsmanship, it was determination and hardwork by both Triboa Bay Living and I that made Julia possible.
