DESIGN NAME: Diodon Solium
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sofa
INSPIRATION: Diododon Soliun sofa is a part of the project called "Fossiture" (Fossiled furniture). Fossiture has it's own legend about a number of mysterious ancient creatures, which remains accidentally appeared in the hands of some lucky scapegraces. These individuals decided to reconstruct the creatures, using their wild imagination. They succeeded, but due to the lack of academic knowledge, the result of reconstruction slightly differed from what everyone was expecting. All objects turned out to be a strange and magnificent combination of animal shapes, machinery parts and furniture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Diodon Solium is a steampunk and animalistic-style sofa. It is meant to be an object both artistic and useful, that looks attractive and extraordinary from any angle. The combination of plywood, solid wood and steel worked perfectly when we were trying to reach the designed shape and volume.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: sofa, attaman chair
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: started in december 2015 finished in august 2016
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The construction consists of plywood sheets intersecting each other via meshes. During the engendering part we were trying to find such angles of intersection, that would distribute the user's weight evenly over the surface of the lair. Also, we were developing the sheets' installation sequence, that "locks" the construction on finish and all the weight that affects sofa's seat after, only tightens this "lock", making whole construction more solid, instead of shattering it.
CHALLENGE: We wanted our sofa to have a look of a huge and heavy volume, that is floating upon a floor surface. Also, we wanted it to translate this feeling of weightlessness to the user. The task was to avoid straight vertical supports, move the existing supports as close to the center of construction as possible, and not to lose the equilibrium. We had to find the right center of mass (including user's weight) and it was done by completing a number of tests in which we were reassembling the construction and adjusting the seat's height and depth.
