DESIGN NAME: Cultiver
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Orange handbag
INSPIRATION: This project explores and identify a by-product material from an existing manufacturing or fabrication process, and leveraging on its inherent properties to design a process that transforms the material into a fitting product.
Hence, we looked into organic waste find possibilities to transform the perceived value of the material, orange peel. The by-product went through four stages: dehydration, cutting, assembling and stitching.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In the beverage industry, orange peels are disposed at a massive rate.
This by-product generated from the process of fruit juice extraction is
innately pliable and durable, thus presenting itself as a great leather
alternative for handbag making.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The orange handbag produced a pleasant aroma for the user, and the environment. After all the moisture is removed, the orange material behaves like leather as it is dried.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in July 2016 in Singapore and finished in November 2016 in the National University of Singapore.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After four stages – dehydration, cutting, assembling and stitching
– the orange peels are preserved and darkened in colour after using the industrial oven to set at 150 degree ceisus for 45minutes.
These pieces are trimmed to exact dimensions and connected
strategically (herringbone pattern joint against vertical patterns) to ensure strength and durability. Finally, these resulting sheets of orange material are stitched together with traditional leather sewing techniques to form a unique handbag.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Context of Design:
In definition, orchard is defined as the garden of fruit plantation. Hence the orange peels are collected from the beverage stores at Orchard Road, in Singapore. However , Orchard road comprises a high number of premium handbags shops, such as Hermes and Chanel. Cultiver was developed as a concept to question if we are able to transform organic waste into a premium product. Thus, it educates the public to cultivate and make your leather handbag.
CHALLENGE: The unique property of orange is that it produced a fresh and pleasant aroma. Hence the challenge is to find ways to preserve the material. This project looks into the ways of preserving food and make use of the technique of drying food. Sun drying of food is extensively practised in many tropical and sub-tropical countries where there is sunshine during the dry season. Thus, different tests such as Sun drying, mechanical drying and soaking in salt water were conducted to find the best solution to conserve the properties of orange. It was concluded that mechanical dehydration delivers a promising result.
