DESIGN NAME: Loyly
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Sauna and Restaurant
INSPIRATION: There is a rectangular box containing warm spaces that is covered with a free form wooden "cloak". There are sheltered outside spaces in between. The lamellas function like venetian blinds and block the views from outside. The structure protects the building from the harsh coastal climate. It shades the interior spaces and helps to reduce the use of energy to cool the building. Moreover, the stepped cloak forms stairs to climb on to the roof and look out terraces on top of the building.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With Loyly Helsinki offers foreign visitors a public sauna experience - a must when visiting Finland. The building was designed slim and elongated so as not to cut the narrow park. The volume is kept as low as possible so that it doesn't block views from the future residential blocks. The sauna is developed into an easy-going, faceted construction that is more part of the park than a conventional building. When the wooden building turns gray, it will become more like a rock on the shoreline.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There are three different saunas that are all heated with wood including a traditional smoke sauna without a chimney, a true rarity in an urban sauna. This is how you can experience all sorts of Finnish Loyly during a single visit. You can swim in the sea and in the winter there is an avanto, the hole in the ice for winter swimming.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design started in 2011 and the construction in 2015. The sauna was opened to publick in May 2016.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cloak is made of Nextimber, a special heat treated gluelam that is pressed to modify timber’s properties and freeing from need of surface treatments needing a lot of maintenance. There are around 4000 planks, more of 2000 of which have individual shape, that were modeled and precisely cut to individual forms by a computer-controlled CNC machine. The cloak has an interesting load bearing steel structure as the beams meet in different angles.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Gross Area 1071 sqm (without covered space under the cloak)
Terrace area 1510 m2 + roof terrace 249m2 + look out terrace 58 m2
capacity restaurant 150, terrace 300, sauna up to 96
Total cost ~6,0 m euros

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We made several full scale mock ups to test the exact dimensions of the cloak and how it should be lit. We also tested several different wood materials to see how they are aging in harsh climate. It came out that some more common sustainable impregnation methods didn’t work with our dimensions and we finally found the Finnish start-up company Nextimber that modified left over wood to produce long lasting timber material that doesn’t need any surface treatment like oiling.
CHALLENGE: The idea for Loyly came from Helsinki city but it was not easy to find a client for the project as running public sauna is not very profitable business. Twice our client withdrew and we had to find a new client. Also the site changed twice and the project took six years to complete even though it is not very big in size. Only when Antero Vartia and Jasper Paakkonen took the project over and got a bank loan of more than 6 million euros, the building works could start.

Loyly by Ville Hara is an outstanding example of architecture, building and structure design. This award-winning work showcases the designer's ability to combine innovation with sustainability. Drawing inspiration from the harsh coastal climate, the building features a unique wooden "cloak" that provides shelter from the elements, as well as a stunning aesthetic. The lamellas of the cloak act like venetian blinds, allowing light to come in while also providing privacy. The stepped form of the cloak also serves as stairs to access the roof and terraces on top of the building. The use of Nextimber, a special heat treated gluelam, also adds to the sustainability of the project. It is truly remarkable how Ville Hara was able to bring together modern design and sustainable methods to create a masterpiece that is part of the park and not a conventional building.

This design is simply stunning! It is a perfect blend of form and function, marrying the warm and inviting public sauna experience with the beauty of the surrounding park. The careful attention to detail is evident in the slim and elongated design that allows the park to remain uninterrupted while still providing a memorable experience. I was particularly impressed with the way the wooden "cloak" not only provided shelter from the coastal climate but also created opportunities for the building to become more integrated with the park. Truly, this design is a magnificent example of architecture, building and structure design.

I'm absolutely amazed by the design of Loyly! It's the perfect way to bring a unique experience to the visitors of Helsinki. The slim and elongated design ensures that the building doesn't take away from the beauty of the park, while the low volume ensures that it doesn't obstruct the view. The faceted construction is such a creative way to make the building more of part of the park rather than a conventional building. I'm sure that as the wooden building turns gray, it will look even more like a beautiful rock on the shoreline. Kudos to Ville Hara for creating a beautiful and unique design that was awarded the A' Design Award.

I am in awe of the creative genius behind this award-winning work. The use of a free-form wooden "cloak" to protect the building from the coastal climate is an ingeniously simple yet effective solution. The lamellas that function like venetian blinds not only block the views from outside but also shade the interior spaces, reducing the need for energy to cool the building. The stepped cloak further doubles as a set of stairs that lead to the roof and look out terraces, providing the perfect vantage point to take in the surrounding views. Truly a work of art!

This award-winning work is an amazing example of how a public space can be designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The thoughtful use of wood and steel, combined with the clever use of shading and lighting, makes it an impressive feat of architecture. The idea of creating a sheltered outdoor space between the box-like structure of the sauna and the freeform wooden cloak is truly unique and adds a wonderful dynamic to the overall design. The use of special heat-treated gluelam to create the planks of the cloak is an impressive feat of engineering, making it a truly remarkable piece of architecture.
