| DESIGN NAME: Layers PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee tables INSPIRATION: Layers takes inspiration from the theme of the Swedish pavillion at the London design biennale 2016; equal terms collaborations between designers and producers based on shared responsibility for costs and profits. It emphasizes the importance of a re-introduction of the artistic process within production. We need to find new ways of producing by going local again and questioning unsustainable business models. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Layers is a trinity of geometrical coffee tables made from two coloured sheets of valchromat. The layered style combined with the alternating colours gives a different look depending on the angle the tables are viewed from. The variation of the layer direction gives the user possibilities to create unique settings just by rearranging the tables as a group or by using them individually. The idea that lead to this 50/50 design was meant as a symbol for the collaboration between designer and producer. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The trio of coffee tables can be placed as a group or used individually. Their strong graphical appearance make them ideal for use in private settings, like in a living room, as well as in public spaces, like a hotel lobby. The geometrical shapes of the coffee tables combined with the layered style and alternating colours gives the user the possibility of altering the appearance of the tables, simply by arranging them in different ways or turning them to face different directions. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2016 in Malmo, Sweden. It was exhibited for the first time as part of the Swedish pavillion at the London Design Biennale 2016. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The table trio is made from two coloured sheets of valchromat. A CNC machine is used to cut and drill the different table pieces whereafter the pieces are attached through the pre-drilled holes and glued together. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Small table: 240 x 240 x 297 Medium table: 400 x 400 x 360 Tall table: 300 x 300 x 480 TAGS: coffee table, valchromat, layers, swedish, design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea was to create a project where you from the very beginning cooperate with the producer to get a final product that is compatible with the machinery hosted by the producer and her/his craft skills. To work closely together, designer and producer, to adapt from each others knowledge and skills. To invite someone in from the very start. It's about adding that extra layer to the whole design process working towards a utopian relationship between designer and producer. CHALLENGE: In a previous project working with the same producer we used their CNC-machine for cutting shapes in three dimensions which proved expensive as too much time was spent in the machine. With Layers we found a way of working better suited to the machine; cutting multiple pieces of the same simple forms and drilling holes for aligning the pieces when gluing them together. This vastly improved production time, shortening both the time spent in the CNC-machine as well as the required manual labour.
